Show T. The 5th Annual Demolition Derby was held last Saturday Sat-urday night, with car crashing fun for everyone. Winners of the five heats were given trophies and PANGUITCH It was a fight to the finish at the 5th Annual Demolition Derby, held last Saturday Sat-urday night in Panguitch, sponsored spon-sored by Panguitch native Dan Frandsen and his wife Teresa. The grandstands were full of excited spectators as drivers participated par-ticipated in four separate heats, with nine cars entered. In the first heat, Jason Ogden, Richfield; Ross Bradshaw, Adamsville; Teft Short, Min-ersville, Min-ersville, Terry Gleave, Panguitch and Mike Johnson, Panguitch all battled for the top three positions, with the first place winner, Ogden, Og-den, taking home a trophy and $100. Second place went to Ross Bradshaw, winning a trophy and $50 and third was Teft Short, winning a trophy and $25. During the second heat, Jimmy Johnson's car, sponsored by Color Country Motel, took home a first place win, Brian cash awards for being the last car to hit another. Nine cars were entered in the nights event, sponsored spon-sored by local business from throughout the county. Demolition Derby Is A Great Way To End The Garfield County Fair Pender, beaver, took second and D. J. Sidwell's car, sponsored by Frontier Service out of Escalante, took third. The main event, which consisted con-sisted of the top three or four cars from the previous heats, saw Ross Bradshaw take home a first place win, a trophy and $200. Jason Ogden received second place, $100 and a trophy and D. J. Sid-well Sid-well took third, for $50 and a trophy. Also competing in the main event were Jimmy Johnson, Michael Mi-chael Johnson, Teft Short, Brian Pender, and Travis Shakespear, sponsored by Garfield Ready-Mix. A "Bash To The Last" heat was also held, with Ross Bradshaw Brad-shaw taking first place. In the Powder Puff heat, Kelly Mandel, of Cedar City took first place, in her last time driving in a demolition derby. First-time driver Debbie Smith, Beaver, took second place. Mandel won $70 and Smith was given roses. New this year, the Dedicated Driver award was given to Jimmy Johnson and Terry Gleave, who have entered a car every year in the derby, and do their best to encourage others to enter cars. Also, the most aggressive driver award was given to Michael Johnson, 16, of Panguitch. Rumors to the contrary, the Frandsens say that the derby will "definitely be back next year" as they expressed their appreciation to everyone who participated in and supported this year's event. Special thanks went to Gem jewelers jew-elers for their donation of the grand prize trophies and to the judges for their special volunteer role. |
