Show Beer and basketball team for 15-game Alamo league season Over the years, many things have been joined in natural combinations. Mustard goes with hot dogs, Laurel goes with Hardy and skiing goes with snow. But Alamo bartender Keith Brons-tein Brons-tein stumbled on a combination that was so obvious that no one ever noticed it. And it is such a natural that it will probably replace Batman and Robin as the most common duo. It's beer and basketball. What an alliteration what a concept what a way to enjoy an evening. After running your brains out up and down the hardwoods for an hour, you can walk about 50 feet and enjoy several (more is optional) frosties and catch some big-screen ESPN. "We're just trying to get some people together to get in a little exercise exer-cise and have fun," Bronstein said. "We're a lot looser than a formal )eague. We have no refs or time 'clocks." , " " " s.rn payer! cau the fouls and games are played in 15-point halves. Each basket counts one point. The games tend to last about 50 minutes so players can fit in three games every Monday and Wednesday when the league meets at the Memorial Building. The games are set to be played at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. ' "We have six teams and there are still people coming in to play," Bronstein said. "We may be able to squeeze some players in because of no-shows on different nights, but we can't add more teams." The six teams and their captains are: Church of What's Happening Now Bears, Rick Phaler; Barbarians, Bar-barians, Bill Reed; Burnt Oranges, Curtis Williams; The A Team, Chris Pappas; and Rielly's All Stars, Rich Rielly. The teams play a 15-game season and Bronstein is currently considering consider-ing having a tournament at the end of th6jear,';;; "S. One of the'unique things about the league is that at halftone of each game, players get to take a shot from halfcourt. Any player making that shot gets a free beer at the Alamo after the game. Then, after the season, everyone who made a halfcourt shot during the season will have a shoot-off for a grand prize of a $25 bar tab. The winning teams on Monday and Wednesday night get three pitchers of beer while the losing team gets one pitcher. The league also names a "Dribbler of the Week" for the person per-son who gets the most inebriated after the games that week. Last week that distinction went to a gentleman nicknamed "McAdoo." "It's been fun so far and the guys have been good about calling foul shots," Bronstein said. "Our main purpose is to give all skill levels a chance to play and most of all have fun." . ... ,. ; tj f ,:; dunk, you can certainly drink. |
