Show A LITTLE TARIFF TiNKERING The New York Tribune thinks that all the trouble over deficits would be remedied by the passage of a bill not a very long one by Congress if approved ap-proved by the President restoring the duties of the McKinley bill on Cpr tain articles These articles are flax hemp and their manufactures silk goods wool and woolens In addition to this there should be some special provisions as to earthenware tin plate and glass This of course would repeal re-peal the provisions of the WilsonGor man tariff By doing this the Tribune Tri-bune thinks some 44000000 would be > added to the revenue Whether or not that amount of revenue would be realized real-ized as a result of these proposed changes if made is conjectural Calculations Calcu-lations as to what would be realized from such duties are generally Lased on the amounts imported under the present tariff It is not at all provable that with increased duties they would equal what they are under the present pres-ent tariff I While the wool growers would be well pleased to have a heavy tariff imposed on wool when the proposition is made in Congress they will find a very heavy opposition from wool consumers and their voice will be far more potent than the wool growers are apt to think Such a bill as the Tribune proposes is not likely to receive the Presidents approval for it would be a surrender of his position and the position of his party on the tariff question What the Tribune suggests is apparently in the interest of the nation and nothing more If the Republican party is really willing to sacrifice politics for patriotism patriot-ism why will it not consent to an increase in the internal taxes It is calculated that a tax of a dollar a barrel bar-rel on beer would furnish an additional addi-tional revenue of 30000000 A slight increase in the tax on whisky and on tobacco would furnish many millions more Nor would such taxes tend to in any way unsettle business a thing that tariff legislation always does What Congress will do no one can tell but the people will not welcome much tariff tinkering nor stand it I |
