Show TIE CHESS SHARPS NEW YORK Dec 2A dispatch from Hastings England announces that a match for the worlds chess championship between Harry N Pillsbury Pills-bury of Brooklyn and Emanuel Las ker is under the consideration of the Hastings and St Leonards chess clubs tine energetic clubs which managed the international masters tournament in England last August wherein Mr Pillsbury gained fame and honor for himself The Brighton Eng Chess club has subscribed liberally to the match fund and the amount necessary is said to be pledged necessar I the players agree to the terms of the match the contest will occur early in 1896 one part of the series being played at London Mr Lasker recently stated that he would not play fO stakes of less than 2000 a side in or der he puts i that he might not be bothered with too many aspirants for championship honors The controversy between Emanuel Lasker and William Steinitz over the possession of the worlds championship champion-ship has not been settled Mr Stein Its has again written to the London Times reiterating his claim that Mr Lasker has forfeited the championship because of his failure to accept Stein its challenge and his refusal to play within a reasonable time Mr Stein Its upon that ground claims the championship cham-pionship which he held for twenty eight years before he was defeated by the young phenomenon Many compe tent critics admit the justice of comp itzs contention and should Pillsbury defeat Lasker he may have to play Stelnitz before he can claim the championship cham-pionship unquestioned c t |
