Show THE PRECISE SITUATION The election of members of the Board of Education one from each precinct in this city will be held on Wednesday Wednes-day It is an important occasion Added to the Interest which should ordinarily or-dinarily attach to such an election is the contest that is on between nonpartisan non-partisan and intensely partisan candidates candi-dates This is especially the issue in the First Third and Fourth precincts In the First precinct the Democrats have nominated Professor Kingsbury with the distinct understanding and j pledge that he will be nonpartisan in all his official acts if elected His opponent op-ponent is nominated as a Republican and a partisan who claims that To the victors belong the spoils and therefore Republicans are entitled to I control the schools The same may be said of the Third I and Fourth precincts except that the candidates nominated there by the Democrats are the present incumbents They are John E Hansen and Joseph Toronto Each of them has been a i competent and capable member of the board against whose official acts nothing noth-ing can be alleged The efforts to supplant sup-plant them proceed from partisan motives mo-tives They have been unpartisan in the past they will be in the future if reelected But the Republican endeavor I en-deavor to put Republicans in their places is a partisan movement for partisan par-tisan ends In order to make an issue outside of this partisan question it has been falsely stated that two of the gentlemen gentle-men named are opposed to the high school That is of Tribune manufacture manufac-ture Garbled and untruthful reports of their views have been published and notwithstanding the fact that they have been corrected by statements of the gentlemen themselves corroborated by others the Tribune persists in making mak-ing editorial comments for the purpose I pur-pose of deceiving the public and if possible defeating those candidates I Neither of the gentlemen whom we have named is opposed to the high school Messrs Toronto and Kings bury are not prepared to vote for a tax to raise from 100000 to 150000 for j a high school building that is their position i po-sition The attempt is made to confound 1 con-found the school with the building and thus prejudice a certain porton of the j public against those two candidates I It is a paltry and spiteful piece of I work that no paper but the Tribune would stoop to The people of the First Third and Fourth precincts should make it their business and determination to elect Messrs Kingsbury Hansen and Toronto I to as a rebuke to the promotors of the I movement to force partisanship into the school question and to the authors of the false attack on Messrs Toronto and Kingsbury The gentlemen we have named are not nominated as Democrats but as capable men eminently fit for the position posi-tion and pledged to unpartisan official conduct The Democrats had to act asa as-a party because the Republicans refused re-fused to join with them in a nonpartisan nonparti-san election The real issue then is between partisanship and nonpartisanship nonparti-sanship on the Board of Education and therefore in the conduct of the public schools of this city Vote for Messrs Kingsbury Hansen Han-sen and Toronto and thus preserve pre-serve the Board of Education from having a majority of Republican members mem-bers Their election will preserve the present balance of the board and that will be for the best interest of the cause of education in this city Every voter should go to the polls on Wednesday Wed-nesday |
