Show ROOSEVELT SPENDS QUIET SUNDAY AT MONTEREY 'HOTEL DEL MONTE, Cal., May 1L President Roosevelt yesterday spent one of the most restful Sundays he Ws encountered since his trip began. In one of the most beautiful spots in California, Cali-fornia, two miles from the nearest city, unhampered by curious crowds, he had a chance fo thoroughly rest and prepare pre-pare for the coming week, which promises to be one of the busiest of his Journey. i His trtin arrived here at midnight, tftit he did not leave It until about 9 o'elock in 4he mornimr. At that time. 1 Col. Ward and a detachment of the Fifteenth . Infantry, who are stationed St Fort Monterey, headed by the regimental regi-mental band, arrived at his car. After the President had greeted the Colonel and his staff he - was driven to the hotel, where- he and his party had breakfast' At the conclusion of that meal the President and a small party rode horseback over the famous seventeen-mile seventeen-mile drive along the sea, while Gov. Pardee and some of the members of the President's party drove over the route In carriages. The weather was all that could be desired and the trip was greatly enjoyed by the President, who was enthusiastic over the beautiful beauti-ful scenery. In Jhe afternoon he attended' Si. John's chapel on the hotel grounds. Tke service were conducted by the Rev. Hobart Chetwood, the chaplain. At thft conclusion of ,the services the President. Secretary of the Navy Mood President Butler of Columbia college and President Wheeler of the University of California spent a couple of hours strolling about the hotel grounds.- v After dinner President Roosevelt held an Informal reception in one of the parlors of the hotel. He shook hands ' with the guests of the house and with ths officers' who are stationed at Fort Monterey. The uniforms of the latter and the handsome dresses of the ' ladies made the scene a brilliant bril-liant one. Monday night will be spent at San Jose, and San Franciaco w ill be reached Tuesday afternoon. |
