JA. portion of the Uintah Indian reservation, a tract of land In the Uintah and Strawberry valleys, comprising about 7000 acres, will soon be thrown open for settlement. . MaJ.' James McLaughlin, Indian treaty agent for the Government, arrived here yesterday en route to Fort Duchesne to negotiate with the Indians for the t . settlement of their lands question. Although MaJ. McLaughlin has not yet received his final instructions from the .Government, it is believed from reports received from Washington that an effort will be made to purchase the lands from the Indians, and if this cannot be accomplished the tract will be opened arbitrarily. Each adult will be given eighty acres of land and to the other members of the tribe forty acres will be given. A plot of grazing land to be used Jointly by the tribes will also be set aside for them. MaJ. McLaughlin expects to settle the matter' salsfactorily in, about two weeks. '. , This action m the part, of the Government is being taken as a result of the recent act c.
