Show Studded Tires Must Come Off By April 1, Commissioner Says The Utah State Department Depart-ment of Highways has issued is-sued a reminder to Utah motorists that April 1st ends the winter period when studded snow tires may be used. The highway Department also issued a warning to those failing to remove their studded tires by April 1st that failure fail-ure to do so and continuing continu-ing to drive on studded tires constitutes a misdemeanor misde-meanor by State law punishable pun-ishable by a fine up to 299.00 andor six months in jail. According to Henry Hen-ry C. Helland, Director of Highways, it has been proved that studded snow tires cause deterioration to highway surfaces which' is difficult to repair. It has also been proven beyond be-yond any question that the stopping distances of cars equipped with studded tires are greater on dry roads than the stopping distances distanc-es of cars equipped with conventional tires or stud-less stud-less snow tires. These and other facts prompted the State Road Commission of Utah to pass this regulation. Col. Ray Evans, Superintendent Super-intendent of the Utah Highway Patrol has indicated indi-cated that tires will be checked during the periodic perio-dic road blocks which law enforcement officials con- duct to check safety inspection in-spection stickers, drivers licenses, registration, etc. Col. Evans has given his assurance that the new Road Commission regulation regulat-ion will be enforced and violators will be subject to citations. . Col. Evans also pointed out that violators continuing to use their studded snow tires will be easy for patrolmen to spot at night because most studded stud-ded tires throw off an occasional oc-casional flurry of sparks. |
