Show ACCORDION GROUP TO ENTERTAIN FAIR VISITORS The Larry Pino Symphonie Accordion Orchestra will give two concerts at the Utah State Fair next month free of charge to Fair-goers. Woolas A. Macey, secretary-manager, secretary-manager, Utah State Fair Association, As-sociation, said the concerts will bo piven at 2 p.m. Sept. 14-15 in the Youth Auditorium at he West end of the Fair Grounds. The Fair will begin Sept. 7. There is a possibility, too. Mr. Macey said, that the orchestra will perform before the Miss Utah State Fair contest con-test to be held in the Youth Auditorium at 8 p.m. Sept. 12. The 22-piece Salt Lake City orchestra took top honors in the open top senior division for symphonic orchestras during the Western States Accordion Festival in Long Beach, Calif., Aug. 9-11, and returned with nine trophies. The high acclaim came for playing of the fourth movement of "Sheherazade.'' The orchestra was in competition competi-tion with more than 5000 students stu-dents from throughout the West. The accordion orchestra was organized in 1955 by Mr. Pino, and a year later, it won first place at the Rocky Mountain Accordion Assn., festival. In 1957, the orchestra placed second sec-ond in the national contest in Chicago, and the orchestra was featured as guest orchestra at the Western States Accordion. Vnotival in Long Beach where 33 students of Mr. Pino won 17 awards, including the Sweepstakes Sweep-stakes trophy and the Grand Prize. Last year the orchestra placed third in the Top Professional Profes-sional category at Long Beach and one of the students was named first princess to the Festival Fes-tival Queen. Larry Pino studied with Frank Gaviani, who organized the first symphonic accordion orchestra in the United States, and Mr. Pino was a member of this first orchestra. He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Bos-ton, Mass., and played concerts in Boston Symphony Hall and other New England areas prior to coming to Utah in 1951 to teach accordion. His students have been introduced to music circles in Topeka, Kan., Denver, Den-ver, Colo., Chicago, 111., Lor? Beach and New York City. |
