Show mew ew ditch lining methods develop special equipment U e f 4 U 41 f I 1 0 W A 4 ilk t 1 aa 4 e 4 4 FW 11 V al daniel F lawrence engin eer and foster nix water user on north colmon colman look over the specially designed equipment interest in ditch lining pos sibil aties was heightened by a recently completed section of the colman street pitch in the west part of tooele thoele through cooperative action between water users grantsville Grants ville so 1 conservation district and too ele county the newly lined ditch is a relatively new development in d I 1 ning methods and materials such as are used chiefly for road construction employed for the I 1 ning instead of concrete or metal this is the first project of its type undertaken in the state and little information is available as to methods of installation As a result it was necessary for soil conservation services specialists ito to literally start from scratch in the working out of methods for in stalIa stal lation tion and in the design and construct on a of equipment to do the job special equipment for the process was designed by daniel I 1 F lawrence engineer at too ele and the construction of this equipment was undertaken by the I 1 soil conservation under h a direction the total cost of the project is being borne by the water users because of the somewhat experimental nature of the project cost were materially reduced thru cooperation operation of tooele thoele county utah oil refining company and the wasatch 01 refining company Eng engineers of the were assign ed to design and direct the actual construction of the ditch by the grantsville Grants ville soil conservation dis brict I 1 the material used on the ditch con consists fists of a special road mix fur dished by bv the county A flat hot bot torn tom ditch is constructed to exact dimensions and a 2 inch layer of mix is laid down with special spreading equipment this mix is then compacted with a three unit roller and the final step in the pro cess is to spread a seal coat to re duce leaks in small cracks the cost of this project is about one third that of concrete and it is anticipated that successful test ing of this type of lining would re suit sult in installation of many more project of this nature throughout the county preliminary measure ments on this ditch and others throughout the county show that water losses through seepage are running up to 35 percent of the total flow the lining virtually el imi nates losses of this nature used on the section of lined ditch recently completed |
