Show field stream by VERNON W SHIELDS sunnybrook Sunny brook upper provo river dry fly f shing here on the up per provo is improving the water has dropped considerably since I 1 arrived here I 1 don t go much on the old theory that a full moon at af facts the fishing at least on a brushy river or stream when I 1 first arrived here there was no full in moon oon and the fishing was not too good the last two or three nights we have had a bright full moon and the dry fly fishing has improve ed about seventy five percent A couple of days ago my brother in law came up and spent a day of ot fishing lishing with me he got his limit and ard some of them were really beauties bulles I 1 lacked a few of getting the limit but I 1 did beat him as to sze s ze I 1 got one b g rainbow that would go two pounds landing a two pound rainbow on a no 10 fly ny and a ax tapered leader is q quite u ite an exciting job we took a run up to t 0 mirror lake but fishing on the lake was very poor I 1 did not even bother to set up my outa t and give it a try I 1 talked with two fellows from salt lake who had been fishing from a boat for several hours and they had only two small fish they were several others fishing from the shore but no one was any luck the camp sites around mirror lake were all filled up I 1 have nev er before seen so many in this area the road to mirror lake is in very poor condition fact is in my op nion that it is a dis grace to the forest service A place as popular as arror M aror lake should have a decent road leading to it but it doesn t look as if they in tend to do anything about it on the way back from mirror lake I 1 stopped in at soapstone and tried the river there fly fish ing was excellent but the fish were small I 1 caught ten in about an hour and the biggest over nine inches they would take any kind of a fly you wanted to toss out I 1 took a run over on the weber one day and the fishing there was poor the weber was very low and clear I 1 managed to roll over some nice ones but was unable to hook hem them I 1 did not catch one single fish but did see a sight that really gave me a thrill I 1 ran into a doe with two tiny fawns the fawns were still spotted and looked like they were only a couple of weeks old they were drinking from a small stream that emptied into the river and did not see me so I 1 sat and watched them for some time I 1 certainly wished I 1 d had a movie camera with me it is unusual for a doe to have twins and also un usual for them to be born this late in the year the old doe was in very poor condition I 1 could count every rib in her body regulations GOVERNING THE 1947 ELK HUNT scheduled to open nov ath were announced last week when ross leonard game director released the official proclamation the total number of elk permits to be issued this his fall is 1235 last year there were 1060 permits is sued the increase is due to the heavy increase of elk in the nebo district elk permits will be issued only to bonafide residents of utah aside from the regular license a 15 fee will be charged for this special hunt age limit is 16 and over and oly one application will be received from any one sports man the permits will be issued only on the area and for the sex for which the permit is issued the application which will accompany the fifteen dollars and will des ignate the area desired and the sex wanted must reach the utah lish and game department not la ter than 5 ap p m sept 12 public drawing will be conducted at 2 p in september on the heaston game preserve permits for fifteen bull and ten cows will be issued the season will be from novem her ber ath to the opening of the hunting season in utah will begin sept 16 when one hundred male antelope permits will be issued these fleet foot game animals will be hunted in daggett county in browns park area all regions located on the north slopes of the unetah range near manilla utah licenses for these animals will be issued to resident utahna who have state big game hunting licenses and who submit applina eions therefore to the offices of the utah fish and game department not later than rpm 5 p in august the applicator must be accorn pained by a ten dollar check or money order DUCK BAG LIMIT SLASHED last week president truman signed the 1947 migratory water fowl regulations the ducks got the breaks and all the sportsmen sport men got was a thirty day season the daily bag quota will be only four birds with a possession limit of 8 bag and possession limits on geese were set at four only two of which can be canada geese the season in utah will open october 21 and clase november 24 this curtail ment will knock the P props ais out from under the duck hunting sport four birds are not very many hardly worth cleaning and picking |
