Show Game officials restore flow in Sheep Creek A project to restore the inflow in-flow of fresh water into Sheep Creek Lake is nearing completion com-pletion by department of fish and game workmen. Work to clear the bed of the small canal feeding water to the lake began be-gan recently when extremely cold temperatures resulted in heavy icing and stoppage of the flow over nearly a mile of the stream. Any major loss of the lakes, native trout would be of vital concern since eggs taken from these fish are expected to account ac-count for a large portion of such eggs available to the department de-partment for rearing and stocking other waters over the state. Streamflow into any lake replenishes the vital supply of oxygen in the water and is of primary importance during the long winter period when lakes are iced over and there is no wave action nor penetration of sunlight. Current tests show the oxygen oxy-gen content in the lake to be at safe levels but still relatively low. Rft-e.qtabliKhinp the inflow of stream water is considered a must in view of the several weeks remaining during which the lake will be ice covered. With the use of heavy equipment equip-ment now on the job work of clearing the channel is expected expect-ed to be completed in a matter of days, weather permitting. Sheep Creek Lake is situated on the northeast slopes of the Uintas above Manila. It has a surface area of some 80 acres and was .constructed by the department de-partment during 1959. Following Follow-ing construction it was stocked with small native trout, closed to fishing and set aside as a water from which to take the hard-to-get native trout eggs. It is anticipated that the first harvest of eggs will be taken from the mature brood stock there this year. |
