COMMENT BY KEN METCALF WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY Few men are honored in their own lifetime as deeply or widely as they are in memory. You'd think that George Washington, who was call- gv"5Mwi'mwww'q ed "first in , the hearts of " - h i s country- f men," would if ? be an excep- i f . 3 tion. He was v ,' widely rever- ' ed, a popu- : y-lar y-lar President, . V'j 4, a respected : ' ' . j Commander- j A. in-chief. ' ?,-'K ' i Yet it is an L-JLtkJ interesting fact that he, too, has his opposition. Celebrations in honor of his birthday started while he was still President. But m 1896, when a resolution was introduced in Congress to adjourn ad-journ in honor of Washington's birthday, the measure was resoundingly re-soundingly defeated! It was only after his death that the observance of this great mans birthday began to grow, and it has reached its zenith in our own time. For we are still discovering, more than a century-and-a-half later, how much his courage, his strict regard for honor and duty, his unselfish devotion de-votion to his country, became part of our national heritage.
