Show san juan county gets place on utah board of education mrs alice H redd elected at convention of seventh educational district yesterday county superintendent H lloyd hansen and members of the san juan school board returned from price last evening where theyan they attended the regional convention number seven called for the elec tion of a member of the state board of education to fill the expired term of mrs selma lasson fahring of helper utah the seventh region comprises the following school dietr districts 1 acts carbon emery grand san iuan juan north sanpete and south sanpete San pete and the district board of education is made up of the board members member s alad and superintendents of the above districts the term of office of the members of the state board of education is seven years and the newly members will take office at the first of next month members of the county or district boards are not eligible for membership on the state board and neither is any person who holds an office the duties of which may be incompatible with the duties of a member of the state board of education voting in the convention by proxy was not permitted there is no salary provided for members of the state board of education but there is a per them diem of per day for time actually and necessarily spent by each member who does not receive any salary from the state or any subdivision thereof thare of also nce necessary travel expenses there are ten members of the board at present and its meetings are usually held on the third monday of tha month all county superintendents with the exception of mrs helen knight superintendent of grand county were in attendance at the convention anda and a large attendance of board members from the various districts following nominees offered the following applicants were nominated by the convention john L bench sanpete San pete ray P lund sanpete San pete selma lasson fahring carbon mrs alice H redd san juan on the first ballot each of the three first named above received five votes and mrs redd of this county received 13 As there were 28 votes represented in the convention it was decided that 15 votes were necessary for a choice on the second ballot two of the carbon county delegates switched to mrs redd giving her the required 15 votes voles for a choice thereupon the convention moved to make her election unanimous which motion carried unanimously sanpete county districts were divided against each other which possibly was the deciding factor in the election san juan county is proud to have a seat on the state board and we feel sure that in the person of mrs alice H redd wife of leland redd of the san juan school board they will have an able and efficient representative and one that will labor unceasing ng iry y to see that the students in flu Q settled districts obtain equal opportunity with those of the populous and wealthy districts carbon board hosts at banquet at the close of the convention all ah the delegates were served a fine banquet in the domestic science department of the carbon county high school at which dinner speeches were made by all the county superintendents present and a number of the board members the guests then went on a tour of inspection through the auto mechanics shops and other departments part ments of interest of the school and inspected the work on a new junior high school now in progress taken all in all the san juan delegation voted it a very pleasant and profitable day |
