Wangsgaard Ogden Valley Historian Sheep moving slowly through Ogden Canyon was a common sight over the years, until in the 1940’s when the sheepmen were advised to truck their herds up to the mountains in the spring, and down to wintering grounds in the lower valley in the fall. Still, for another 20 years, there were some sheepmen who continued trailing their herd through the canyon, possibly for economic reasons. During the time when the herds were driven through the canyon in this fashion, it was a big problem for motor vehicles to pass. Driving through, if you were facing the sheep going in the opposite direction, the animals moved aside fairly easy. But if going the same direction, there was nothing to do but patently work your way through the herd or behind it because those animals seemed to be completely unaware of their need to move. A few beeps of the horn, or a gentle hit by the bumper would sometimes cause the sheep to jump a little, but they would continue to take their own sweet time moving ahead or aside. It was a slow process. One can only imagine the frustration encountered by those who were in a hurry. Once in awhile someone in a vehicle would get out in front and try to scurry the critters aside by clapping hands, yelling, or whistling. Think what would happen today if a herd like this was being slowly trailed through Ogden Canyon. There would be cars backed up the full length of the canyon both ways. And we fuss over having to wait a couple of minutes for construction! Sheep move slowly down Ogden Canyon in a pastoral scene calling attention to the significance of livestock industry to local economy. Photo reprinted courtesy of Standard-Examiner 1962.
