Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 18 Volume III, Issue III December 1, 2000 Final Ruling on Powder Mountain Land Sale Still Pending By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Staff Parties involved in the lawsuit against Weber County are still awaiting a ruling by Second Judicial District Court Judge Michael D. Lyon. The parties appeared in court on November 21 after the hearing was postponed from a November 9 scheduled hearing. Attorneys for the Plaintiffs and Defendants answered final questions from the judge in reference to material obtained from written depositions. The attorneys also made one last final appeal to the judge. Burton Takes County Commission Race Citing case law from a similar court case, Plaintiffs argued that the Statute of Limitations never was invoked or “triggered,” because no public notice was given prior to the sale of public land impacted by the county’s own General Plan as mandated by Utah State Code. Attorneys for the Defendants accused the Plaintiffs of a “tortured interpretation” of the quoted statute. The judge stated that he needed more time to consider the issues, but would have a final decision some time during early December of this year. Future Elections May Go High-tech By Barbie Sunderland Ogden Valley News Staff In future elections, Internet voting may become a reality, boosting voter turnout. Weber County was one of five counties nationally that participated in a pilot program which allowed some oversees military members to register and vote on the Internet. Weber County Clerk/Auditor Linda Lunceford says she is delighted with the results. The project, which has been three years in the making, is more secure than the traditional method. While traditional methods don’t require people to show identification, on-line participants must prove their identity with a digital signature. Many private and military citizens’ votes are disenfranchised within the current system, says Lunceford. Because of the mailing time to many overseas locations, many ballots don’t reach voters in time, and many ballots don’t reach the Weber County Clerk’s office in time. dickd@wardleygmac.com Department of Defense personnel will evaluate the program’s results over the next several months. County Commission incumbent Glen Burton of Eden won the County election race, giving him an opportunity to serve a second term as part of the three-person commission that manages the county’s business. Though he gained a slim majority of the votes countywide, winning with 50.87% of the votes, election results show that Ogden Valley and Ogden Canyon supported Robert Fuller in the Commission race. Fuller captured 51.59% of the votes within Eden, Huntsville, Liberty and Ogden Canyon, while Republican Glen Burton received 40.05%; Independent local candidate Gregg Chambers, 6.83%; and Thompson, Natural Law candidate, 1.53%. Be it from a blown tire, overheated engine or dead battery. In 1999, AAA alone answered almost 29 million calls for roadside service. Why are those numbers so high? The average motorist can spend upwards of 20 hours a month driving to and from work. More time on the road means more chances for driving mishaps. So having items for emergency use is critical. Experts at Prestone Products suggest that in every car, truck and van on the road, there should be a few essential items: Tire inflator and sealer Portable jump starter Antifreeze/coolant Oil Washer fluid Blanket $10OFF Complete Brake Service Most Vehicles. And expressways leave very little shoulder room for pulling over, creating a hazardous and potentially dangerous situation. With vehicles flying by at speeds above 60 mph, the last thing you want to do is walk to the nearest service center. And if it’s late at night and you’re unfamiliar with the area, you may feel uncomfortable leaving your vehicle. That’s when a tire inflator, like Prestone Tire Jack tire inflator and sealer, becomes essential. You can seal and inflate your tire quickly and drive to safety to change it. Then there’s the infamous dead battery you’re left with after leaving your vehicle’s lights on during the day. Whether you’re at home or in a strange parking lot, a portable jump starter like the Prestone Jump It portable power source, lets you quickly jump start your vehicle. It even offers additional convenience by providing portable power for devices like lanterns, spotlights and cell phones—other musthaves for emergency kits. Has your engine light ever gone on just as you’re leaving the office? You might need some oil, antifreeze or brake fluid. Even though you may just need a quick fluid re-fill, you shouldn’t drive if your engine light is on. So check your fluids. For instance, if your vehicle’s engine coolant level is low, having a jug of . . . antifreeze/coolant could help you avoid an overheated engine on your way home. Prepare yourself for safe driving. Invest in an arsenal of products that will help you avoid getting stranded in almost any driving situation. Note: In our area, other musthaves may include a back of rock salt and a shovel for winter emergencies. Extra hat, gloves, coat and boots may also be a good idea. |
