It had snowed during the day and the roads were slick. As he approached the corner prior to Pineview’s windsurfing ramp, Robert’s tires lost their grip on the road and headed into the snow-covered shoulder. As the van started quickly sliding sideways towards the water, Robert recalls that he was not afraid of dying at the moment. According to police reports, the van went over the edge of the road and rolled four times before hitting the water. Robert’s first thoughts were of how to get out of the van. All but the driver’s side window had been blown out during the tumble down the embankment; he unbuckled his seatbelt and swam out through the driver’s window. He recollects now how lucky he was that the power windows on his new van worked even with the car turned off. Once out of the sinking van, the man who had been driving in front of Robert at the time of the accident, pulled over to see if he could help. He started yelling down to Robert to make sure he was all right. The man descended the slope and helped Robert to his own red pickup truck. He took off Robert’s soaking jacket and told him to get into the truck to stay warm. At first, Robert graciously declined this offer because he was afraid of getting the truck dirty. After being assured that there was a towel on the seat, Robert climbed in and waited for the paramedics and police to arrive. Paramedics arrived quickly and Robert was at the hospital by seven o’clock p.m. He suffered from only minor concussions, had five stitches in his forehead, and was home by eleven thirty. Robert wants to thank everyone who was involved in his rescue. His heart especially goes out to the mystery man in the red pickup whose name he never found out. He hopes this article will let this nameless hero know how grateful he is for saving his life. Burn Victims’ Fundraiser a Great Beginning On November 18, the American Legion in Huntsville hosted a fundraiser for burn victims Tyler Montague and Lance Buchi. The band Life’s Highway played to a full house at the Legion. They raised almost twice as much money as the Weber State University fundraiser, held on the eleventh. Tyler’s Aunt Marianne Ratcliffe of Huntsville wants to thank all in the Valley who helped make the event a success. Mike Christensen, manager of the American Legion in Huntsville, was overwhelmed by the turnout on Saturday. He stated, “I had no idea of what to expect.” Mr. Christensen said the main reason he got involved was because, “I felt so bad for the boys and the years and FUNDRAISER cont. on Page 8 |
