Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 4 Volume III, Issue III December 1, 2000 Looking to Escape from Winter Weather? By Jane Olson, Adventure Travel Since winter arrived early this year, you may already be dreaming about somewhere warm and tropical! One suggestion might be a cruise to Mexico, Hawaii or the Caribbean. If you’ve been scared away by some old biases against cruising, you may wish to reconsider. Here’s why: 1. Cruising is for all ages. Once the province of wealthy seniors, cruising now caters to a diverse market, old and young, including families with children. Many cruise ships have programs for “children and teenagers” so you can pursue your interests while they enjoy their own activities. son is sharing the cabin). The Hawaiian Island cruises are priced higher, but they are still a great value in island hopping, and you only have to unpack once! 2. Cruising is a “buyer’s” market. While airfares and hotel costs have pushed steadily upward, cruising rates have remained relatively level. With all the new ships coming out, you can expect to see bargains. The best deals will be on the lines with sailings to the Caribbean and Mexico where you’ll find rates starting around $100 a day per person (less if a third or fourth per- 3. Dress as you please. If you like to dress up for dinner and dancing, some ships maintain the old formal atmosphere. But on most big ships, you can wear the same sort of clothing you’d wear at a land resort. You don’t even have to dress for the traditional “Captain’s Dinner” if you don’t want to. There are plenty of new options to skip the formalities and have your meals in one of the buffets or the ship’s other theme restaurants. 4. Eat what you want. Certainly, the “open food service” on cruises makes it easy to overindulge. But if you’re on a diet, you’ll find food options that won’t increase your waistline. 5. Enjoy plenty of activities. Most big ships offer a range of activities like swimming, live stage shows, in-room movies, card and athletic games, casinos and onboard shopping. Or, if you prefer, find a quiet spot to catch up on reading your favorite books. 6. Forget seasickness. All modern cruise ships have stabilizers that eliminate most pitching and rolling motions. And the ships stay away from areas with really rough seas. If you’re prone to any kind of motion sickness, there are a variety of medications that will eliminate your discomfort. So, store that snow shovel in the garage and sail off to a warm destination this winter! ADVENTURE TRAVEL Full Service Travel Agency Specialist in Hawaii, Mexico, Disney, Cruises, Golf Packages.
