Show I ne rarK Kecora a section a Thursday, April 15, 1993 Page B 7 Arts Council organizing directory The Utah Arts Council, in conjuncion with the Utah Designer Craftsmen organization, invites Utah craft artists to be represented in a contemporary craft resource directory they are publishing as part of the "Year of American Craft 1993." Representation in the directory is open to artists working at a professional level in recognized craft media. Work must be original. Student work done for college or university credit or work created under supervision, as well as precast objects or work made from commercial kits, will not be acceDted. For an inclusion fee of $25, each contributing artist will be accorded space in the directory for an address, artist statement and a black and white photograph of his or her work and will receive two complimentary copies of the directory. Additional copies will be available for $9.00 each. The directory will provide information to both artists and buyers and help to promote creativity and expand markets in the craft field. Wide participation will allow for an accurate representation of the state of the craft in Utah. The deadline for completed applications has been extended to April 30. Ed Ames at Hadassah anniversary The Salt Lake City Chapter of Hadassah, a worldwide Women's Zionist Organization, celebrates "Hats Off to 50 Years," Sunday, April 25. Hadassah will host its annual donor event, to raise funds for the Hadassah Medical Organization. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a champagne social hour featuring Harry Glow and the Golden Glow Band, at the Salt Lake City Marriott. The evening will feature entertainer Ed Ames. Ames is best known for his long singing career. Beginning with his hit RCA recording, 'Try to Remember," Ames has sold more than 20 million albums, including his biggest hits, "My Cup Runneth Over" and "Who Will Answer." He also has a long list of successful acting parts to his credit, varying from a starring role in an Off-Broadway production of The Crucible to his greatest theatrical triumph in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with Kirk Douglas. He also co-starred in the television series Daniel Boone. He recently guest-starred on Murder She Wrote, the CBS mystery series. The 250-member Salt Lake City Chapter of Hadassah works with 385 chapters all over the country to support the operation of two major hospitals in Jerusalem. Hadassah is the first group to bring any kind of medical care to then Palestine. The cost is $25.00 per person. In addition to the entertainment, there will be food and a special presentation spotlighting Hadassah's 50 years of service in Salt Lake. The event is black tie optional. Luncheon to feature Pam Houston Pam Houston, a nationally acclaimed local author, will be the featured speaker at the Friends of the Library annual luncheon to be held on Wednesday, April 28, 1993 at the Kimball Art Center. Her latest book, Cowboys Are My Weakness will be on sale and she will be signing copies. Houston's stories have been featured in Mademoiselle, Mirabella, Mississippi Review, Quarterly West, Gettysburg Review, Cimaron, Crazyhouse, . Puerto del Sol and other magazines. Her nonfiction has been published in the New York Times, Kenyon Review, Countryside, Allure, and House and Garden. Her story "How to Talk to a Hunter" was selected tat Best American Short Stories, 1991. Houston is a licensed river guide and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Utah. She lives in Park City with her husband, Michael, and her dogs, Jackson and Hailley. The four of them spend at least 100 nights a year outside. The luncheon will be catered by David's Catering. Mother's Day gifts, including signed copies of Houston's book, a deluxe Park City wild flower seed mix assembled and donated by the Park City Garden Club, herb plants and baskets, note cards and "Li-Berry "Li-Berry Jam," will be available for purchase at the luncheon. Proceeds from the luncheon will be used for the Children's Room at the new Library and to enhance collections. Chamber music study program part of annual Deer Valley Festival For the past five years the Park City Chamber Music Society has been planning and preparing to add a summer study program for young musicians to the Deer Valley International Chamber Music Festival. The new program will run from Aug. 1 through Aug. 29. In addition to providing chamber music and chamber orchestra study for young players, the program is open to professional musicians and advanced non-professional musicians on a week-to-week basis. The program is open to string quartets, string trios, woodwind quintets, individual string players, .wind players, pianists and harpsichordists. The study program includes chamber orchestra, student and faculty recitals and chamber performances, concerto opportunities, private lessons, chamber music coaching, and sight-reading sight-reading sessions. The student study program fee is $1200 per student for the entire four-week session and will include housing, lunch five days a week, coaching sessions, and admission to all faculty performances. Private lessons are $35 per lesson in addition to the program fee. Groups wishing to apply together will receive a discount of $100 per student In an effort to make the program available to all students who qualify, the program is able to offer partial tuition scholarships. Those wishing to apply for scholarships should apply as soon as possible, since scholarship aid is limited. Students should plan to attend the entire four-week four-week session in order to maintain continuity with their groups, but shorter sessions may be arranged on a limited basis. The program is expected to draw students from around the country. Performances and master classes will be open to the general public. The Deer Valley International Chamber Music Festival will be presenting its ninth summer season in Park City. The Festival runs from July 15 through August 31, and will present fourteen chamber concerts along with recitals by visiting artists. For the first time this summer the Festival will include chamber orchestra performances. In addition to the student chamber music program the Festival if offering a "Chamber Music Retreat" program for professional and non-professional musicians. Players or groups can arrange on a weekly basis to participate in the program, attending the master classes, coaching sessions, open rehearsals and performances, while enjoying a nice retreat to Park City.
