Palmer is among 20 students selected for the 1993 Smith Corona Scholastic All-American Ski Team based on academic performance and skiing ability. An excellent student at Whitman College, she was honored at the championship event and received a certificate and a Smith Corona Team jacket To qualify for the USCSA Championships, an estimated 5,000 male and female athletes, representing Alpine and Nordic teams from more than 200 colleges nationwide competed in regional events. Through the Smith Corona program, the top 20 male and female finishers of the USCSA competition who have the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA) were selected for the team. There were five winners for each of Women's Alpine, Men's Alpine, Women's Nordic and Men's Nordic. "Smith Corona, a sponsor of the USCSA for the past seven years, is proud to continue our commitment by recognizing collegiate skiers with outstanding academic records," said Richard Greene, director of advertising for Smith Corona and presenter of the awards at the USCSA championships. "We are glad to team up with Smith Corona, the industry leader in high-quality personal word processors and portable electronic typewriters, to make our 1993 program a success," said Kirk Crawford, competition director, USCSA. "Smith Corona's academically-based awards continue to stress the importance of the scholastic efforts of athletes across the country." The recent hullabaloo about tax rules for household employees, as publicized by the "Nannygate" stories out of Washington, has revealed that most people are unclear as to what the law states. "Basically, the law says that if you pay a babysitter more than $50.00 in a calendar quarter, you could be subject to various employment and withholding tax rules," says Blaine Nelson, tax partner-in-charge of the Salt Lake City office of Deloitte & Touche. Nelson went on to explain that generally, persons performing domestic services in your home are considered employees and not independent contractors. This not only includes services provided by child care providers, but also cooks, housekeepers, maids, cleaning people, gardeners and others. To be deemed independent contractors, which would eliminate the employment tax requirements, persons performing domestic services must satisfy a stringent 20- point definitional test. Two key elements of that test are 1) who controls the hours worked, and 2) who supplies the work tools. In most cases, you control the hours and supply the tools, and so the domestic is considered an employee. Once a person is determined to be an employee who receives more than $50 in cash wages in any calendar quarter, both you and the domestic employee are subject to social security or FICA taxes. If you paid cash wages of $1,000 or more in any calendar quarter, you would also be required to pay Federal unemployment taxes. "Another important issue to consider is workers' compensation insurance," says Nelson. "If you do not purchase the necessary workers' compensation insurance on behalf of your domestic employee, you, as an employer, could be personally responsible for any claim resulting from and injury sustained while working for you. Typically, your homeowner's liability insurance policy will not cover such claims." New broker joins Prudential Coleman The Prudential Coleman announces announ-ces the recent addition of Douglas L.
