The drivers do many things well. One thing the town's bus drivers seldom do is speak out in print or over the airwaves. This week the last week of bus service until Memorial Day we gave four local bus drivers a chance to tell their stories. These are their answers to questions... ...on the job in general: Lemont Hale: It's a neat job. You're kind of out here on your own, providing information and taking care of the customers. My only responsibility is the bus and the people in it I don't have to worry about anything else. Jim Tetro: Generally people feel good when they get on the buses because they're going skiing or going to dinner or going to a show. It's a pretty party festive mood up here. Roland Denbow: It kind of rubs off. The customers are having a good time. You have to have a good time with them. ...on the trolley: Tetro: Everyone hates driving the trolley. The route's only a mile. It's up Main Street and down the alley. You do it six times an hour. Forty-eight times around the block per shift it's just really boring. ...on bad drivers and traffic: Denbow: Probably the traffic is the worst thing. When the resorts close and the traffic hits, everyone wants to get out of town. Some drivers do things that aren't real smart, rather than wait their turn. Hale: I was hit this winter at the corner of the Shadow Ridge Hotel. A tourist slid through the stop sign and hit my bus. There wasn't anything I could do about it. His car was a mess...They cited him and absolved me, but in my mind it marred my record. Denbow: I had a car in Deer Valley come out of a parking lot, look one direction and slam into the side of the bus. ...on answering the same questions over and over again: . . Denbow: We answer the same questions over and over again but it's a different face asking the questions, so it's not bad. If it was the same person asking the question it'd get Old. : . : Tetro: On the trolley they say, "How much is it to ride?" I say, "It's free." They say, "Three dollars?" I say, "No, it's free." They say, "Three?" I say, "FREE!" . Denbow: I enjoy giving advice . Sometimes I tell them what they don't want to know or care less. Tetro: Another question on the trolley is 'Where does it go?" The third question is What's a good place to eat?" I'm not a fancy eater. I think I've been to Cisero's once. I tell them to go to Texas Red's or to the Main Street Deli. Denbow: They'll come from behind the bus or even in front of the bus and not look at the sign and ask where do you go. continued on B4 Concert Review Buckwheat Zydeco visited Salt Lake City last week to play one of over 200 gigs on the road this year.
