II 1 , i is Goodbye, Julie-- You've touched so many lives Longtime Park City resident Julie Haren, well known for her love of animals and participation in horseback endurance races, died at home April 8 at the age of 37. During the last year and a half of her life she battled cancer, and she fought it with the same stamina and strength that made her a successful athlete and outdoor enthusiast. Julie inherited that vigor for life from a proud family line that has deep Utah roots. Her great grandmother, Alma Mineer Felt, in 1861 migrated as a Mormon pioneer to Utah. Her grandparents, LaMont and Vera Felt, were fixtures in the Salt Lake business community for years as owners and operators of Felt Electric, still in business. Her uncle, Al Pelton, founded the original Spudnut donut company, and was the primary developer of Utah's first condominium project, the Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City. Julie was born in Salt Lake City Jan 26, 1956 to Bill and Judy Pelton. At the age of one she moved with her family to the Los Angeles area where her father, a 42-year 42-year pilot for Western Airlines, was based. Although Julie graduated from high school in California, she kept Fine Arts fund-raiser Continued from A1 expressed interest in teaching and presenting in the finished structure. 'This is going to be a full scale community effort to upgrade and enhance the auditorium to serve all the students in the Park City District, now and in the future," said MacQuoid. "We will see to it there are adequate sound and lighting systems as well as fixed seats." MacQuoid added the footprint of the building will still remain the same basic size "but inside is where you'll see the money spent on improvements to the original plan." Fund-raising will be a three-pronged three-pronged approach, she added, with one level being community support, a second level being , business support and the third level coming from major corporate grants and foundations. Other chairs of the fund-raising campaign are Tom Billings, Heather Urich and John Hewlett. Tickets for the "Park City takes close ties to Utah while growing up. Her family frequently visited the Salt Lake area, and owned a condominium in the Treasure Mountain Inn. She later moved back to the state and attended Utah State University where she was a member of the ski team. t m Besides skiing, Julie was active in horseback events, softball, tennis, swimming and biking. She organized many local horse shows for junior riders, and participated in both marathon and triathlete events here and in Hawaii. In 1976, she sailed with her father from Honolulu to Tahiti as part of the Bicentennial Celebration, and in the early 1980s she moved to Hawaii for several years and participated in competitive sailing and fishing events. When Julie returned to Utah she took an interest in Ride and Tie races, where she found success by taking a third-place finish in the 1983 Levi's National Competition, held in Eureka, Calif., with partner Beverly Gray. During the past several years she and her white Arabian, Kona Coast, were a familiar team in endurance rides throughout the region. In 1984, Julie married local building contractor Craig Haren in Hawaii. They have one daughter, Dailey Marie, who will turn 3 in May. Julie touched the lives, of many people in Park City through her participation in sporting events, the many riding lessons she gave to local children, and her business, Park City Pet Sitters. On April 9, Julie was buried during a private family ceremony in the Park City Cemetery. A celebration of her life was held April 12 at the Park City Community Church followed by a gathering at the Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, an educational fund has been established in the name of her daughter, in keeping with Julie's wishes.
