Spanish Fork traveled to St. George last Tuesday to begin its state playoff quest and end a four-year drought. The Lady Dons and Pine View Panthers entered the tournament as respective two seeds. The Lady Dons controlled the tip and scored quickly as Erin Redd found Haileigh Emerine in the post for a 2-0 lead. The Panthers were confused and out of rhythm as the Dons dominated the boards. SF was lead by Shea Johnson, who found Redd and Emerine for eight points. The Panthers finally found some offense with one minute remaining in the first quarter as Dias hit a three and Spinks sank a free throw, but the Dons enjoyed a 10-4 lead ending the first quarter. Pine View continued to struggle on offense against the SF zone. The Lady Dons' shooting went cold as the officials allowed lots of hand checking and bumping by the Panthers. SF finally scored at the 3:38 mark, when Redd scored a layup inside and SF led 12-4. The Panthers hit a big three-pointer, sparking a nine-point rally. SF stopped the PV momentum when Nielsen drained a threepointer, and the Lady Dons took a slim 16-13 lead at the half. The third quarter was a scoring roller coaster for SF. The Dons continued the high-low game as Emerine scored five quick points in the paint. Pine View scored inside as Spinks converted two up-and-under shots and Dias hit a three-pointer to tie the Lady Dons at 22-22. SF broke the tie with a six-point scoring run: Nielsen drove for two, and found Redd for two with 2:30 left in the third quarter and Emerine and Petersen each hit a free throw. Pine View scored 13 points while Spanish Fork scored 12 in the third quarter and the Lady Dons clung to a 28-26 lead. The Lady Dons called time out, hoping to calm down a talented but shaken squad. SF scored back-to-back baskets by Redd and Nielsen and the Lady Dons led 3229. Pine View called time at 4:58 and the Panthers capitalized on a five-point run to lead 34-33. The Panthers hit a free throw, pushing the lead to 35-33. The Lady Dons tied the game at 35-35 when Nielsen found Redd for a layup off a pick-and-roll. The Panthers missed free throws, but SF was called for a traveling violation with 20 seconds remaining in the game. Pine View hit two free throws to lead 3 7 35. The Lady Dons were fouled on the next play, converting one of two and trailing 36-37. Pine View committed a turnover with eight seconds remaining. SF inbounded and quickly advanced the ball past half court, calling a time out. With six second remaining, the Lady Dons stacked the free throw line; the inbound pass flew wide and SF regained control of the ball, but was called for a traveling violation and Pine View escaped with a narrow 37-36 victory. The Lady Dons were led by Emerine with 10 points and Redd with 10. Nielsen snatched 10 rebounds in her final game. Congratulations to the Lady Dons for a successful 2009-10 season. The SF girls represented their school and community honorably. Lady Skyhawks 7/8TH GRADE: 7/8th Grade champs are the Suns. Coach is Marv Rowley. Players are Easton Tallon, Ted Quesenberry, Harrison Hoole, Hayden Bird, Joshua Borkman, Brady Rowley, James Frazier, Cole Christensen and Jesse Rowley. Region champs: From CHAMPS • A14 The second quarter was all Salem as they were able to build a 23-13 lead with 3:16 left in the half after London Simonson went coast to coast for a layup and was fouled. Simonson missed the ensuing free throw attempt, but Hardy was able to grab the rebound and find Simonson in the corner for a threepointer. Salem led 29-21 at halftime. Down by eight, Pay son stormed back in third quarter, putting tremendous defense pressure on the Skyhawks. The Lions cut the lead to 31-28 midway through the quarter after Skinner picked up his third foul. Payson took its first lead of the game at 33-31 with 52 seconds left in the quarter, but Simonson answered right back with a trey to put the Skyhawks back on top, 34-33 at the end of the quarter. The Lions regained the lead in the fourth quarter with 6:15 left to play, going up 37-36. Payson extended that lead to 41-36 with under four minutes remaining in the game. Skinner came back in the ballgame and hit a three-pointer to pull within two points of the Lions, and caused Payson to take a timeout with 2:08 remaining. After the timeout, Skinner again made a three-point play, this time off a foul, putting Salem within one, 43^42, with 1:46 left. Payson attempted to run out the clock and Salem was forced to foul, giving Payson a oneand-one shooting opportunity. Payson missed the first attempt and Salem came away with the rebound. Skinner drove to the basket and made the go-ahead layup for a 44^43 lead. Salem would hold on to the lead, converting a free throw attempt to win 45-43. After the game, the team had the privilege to cut the nets with Coach DeGraffenreid in front of the student body. Hardy stressed the impact that Coach DeGraffenreid has had on this young program. "He's been a great coach. We've all had our ups and downs, and he's always been there to help us get through everything and has really helped us play great basketball," Hardy said. Kate Jar man / TJie Sentinel AT STATE: The Lady Skyhawks took on Tooele in the first round of the state tournament, Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010. The Skyhawks had little trouble with the Buffalos, sending them packing with a final score of 40-23. In the second round of the state tournament, it was Salem's luck to face the Region 5 top seed, Mountain Crest, on the Mustangs' home court.
