SFJHS students take first in state Eric Ferrin SFJH While the mere mention of the stock market gives many adults ulcers, six students from Spanish Fork Junior High have gone into the world of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds and have come out winners. Ethan Williams, Luis Acevedo, and Wyatt Evans made up a team that took first in the state Junior High division, out of 210 teams. Bethany Bramall, Lexi Call, and Melanie Vergara were the team that took 5th. The Stock Market Game is a nationwide simulation, run by individual states, where students are given $100,000 in simulated cash. and are invited to invest that money into the stock market in attempt to make the most money. The students can invest in either stocks or mutual funds, and can invest that money either buying long, or by doing a short sell. The game lasted 10 weeks, during which time the students monitor their stocks, choosing when to buy and sell them. The trades are done in real time according to the rise and fall of the companies that the students are investing in. Though the simulation is only for a short time compared to how much time is recommended to invest in the market, the students learn the value of following stocks, doing research on which companies to in- DFJHS students enjoy dance Matt Gubler DFjH On Feb. 11, 2010 students of Diamond Fork Junior High attended their Valentine's dance. With teenage musical favorites such as "Jump On It," and various songs by Lady Ga Ga, the dance proved to be fun for all. "I enjoyed the dance because of the music," said 8th grade student Aaron Tobler. DFJHS holds four school dances a year, all of which are well attended. The music is enjoyable and fun (and often loud) — but even with loud music, everyone had fun in his or her own way. Nebo Elementary Debate vest in, and how and when to take risks. The team that took first place in the game invested in stocks which included JDA software, Hasbro, and Google. The team that took fifth place invested in stocks which included Amazon and FedEx. The students were presented with their trophy and plaques at a banquet held in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. The teams had to give a short speech to members of the State Office of Education and other education officials. The sponsors of the Stock Market Game for the state of Utah are the Utah State Office of Education, The Utah Council of Economic Education, and the Utah Division of Securities. MMHS Dance/Drill >3; Workshop The Maple Mountain High School Elleves are sponsoring a dance/drill workshop March 8-10. The workshop is for girls in 8th—12th grade and will focus on dance technique. Drill downs and military/precision dance will also be taught. This workshop is designed to prepare those interested in trying out for the Elleves drill team, but is open to anyone interested in learning more about dance. The cost is $15 for the entire workshop. Registration will be Monday, March 8 at 4 p.m. just outside of the dance studio at MMHS. Class will start that day 4-5:30 p.m. The Elleves, who are the reigning Region 8 Drill Team champs, are currently preparing to perform in Orlando, Fla. Seussical coming to Diamond Fork Jr. Courtesy photos DEBATABLE: Ninety-two fifth- and sixth-grade students debated Feb. 25, in the Nebo School District Elementary Debate. Students explored the natural resources found in Utah and the benefits or harms in developing them to sell. Students in the photos will advance on to the state debate on April 23, 2010. The Diamond Fork Junior High Drama Department is proud to announce their new play: "Seussacle." After months of planning, hard work and practice, performances will begin at 7 p.m. on March 10. The play involves elements of various Dr. Seuss' stories and features Horton the elephant from the story "Horton Hears a Who." Cast members are excited about their opportunity to entertain the public. Cast member Kodei Spresser said, "My favorite part of the play is being with my friends, and entertaining people!"
