Show Xow that Salt Lake is over one election and preparing to enter another for public school trustees, trus-tees, perhaps a little information about public schools in general and parochial schools in .particular .par-ticular comes not amiss. The report of the United States commissioner of education for the fiscal year endirrg June 30, just published, shows the parochial school in a new light. This report states that 36,009,561 pupils attended the public schools during the last fiscal year, and that the cost of education edu-cation now averages $22.75 a year, for each pupil, the country over. The same report states that during dur-ing the same time 3,093,876 pupils attended the private schools. As everybody knows, the private schools are chiefly parochial schools; consequently the bulk of this class of attendance belongs to them. The Catholic Directory, in fact, shows that 1,000,000- pupils- are attending those schools. If these were sent to the public schools, of course, it would cost $22.75 a year to educate them. Since Ihey were not, obviously the state was saved this $22.75 per pupiL or a total of $22,750,000 all told. What it saves in eostof putting up school buildings is simply incalculable. Has the state no gratitude for this immense service? is the pertinent inquiry of the Xew World, of Chicago. Ought it not to admit frankly that of all the religious organizations laboring in this -country the Catholic Church is the most helpful? Xot only is the Church doing its full duty in aiding aid-ing the development of social order it is giving the state actual assistance for which the latter should be grateful. What other church in America is donating $22,75000 annually to the cause -of education? ' ; V v |
