The majority of the cardinals present pres-ent considered the allocution rather mild and remarked that the pope omitted the part upon which he pne-viously pne-viously had consulted Fe-ve.ral of the ardinals. In which he wan to have appealed to the people of France and to have urged them to be loyal to the church and use their rights as citizens to prevent the government from perse- ' cuting religion. . All agree that outside of the fact that he has. a somewhat careworn expression, ex-pression, the pope, notwithstanding his recent attack of gout, seems to be in pood health. Praying For Sinners. Liike her beloved son, Mary loves sinners, sin-ners, and whether we are mourning our sins or those of some near and dear one, let us not forget to ask her help. In connection with this subject, some words in the sermon of a Paulist father fa-ther are appropriate here regarding the duty of praying for the conversion of pinners, hardened sinners, drunkards, libertines, apostate?, thieves, and the like, remembering that they are purchased pur-chased by the blood of Christ. "When 1 you say of one, "Oh! he is a most worthless creature." how surprised if j you could hear a whisper coming from bis guardian angel: "Jesus Chri?t j thought him worth dying for," says the preacher. And when you say of ! another, "Oh! I can't bear him: I can't stay a moment in his company," how surprised you would be to hear. ."And 3. an angel of God. 1 gladly keep him company day and night." Bishop McQuaid looked pleased after the meeting and his face seemed to express satisfaction. j Love Human and Divine. This abiding presence of the Sacred Heart in the tabernacle is a truth which I fear we too often . overlook, or, at least, do not consider sufficiently. In our devotions to the Sacred Heart we forget, at times, that. the blessed sacra-1 ment is its greatest proof love, and in our visits and holy communions we do not fully realize the fact that on the altar, behind the tabernacle door, the same divine heart still throbs for love of us, and 'tis always to the altar's foot ihat true devotion to the sacred heart must lead up; here in very truth do we find , the real object of that devotion, the very reason of its institution. For l:at is it Ave Avorship in the devotion t the Sacred Heart? The name tells us. It is the heart the real, -human heart of the Man-God. But is it the heart, dead or separated from the Fa- ' r-red humanity or the divinity? Assuredly As-suredly not, my brethren, but the living 1 heart of the Son of God the heart-of ' Js-us a heart of flesh and blood, which beat for us long years ago on earth, which once was pierced, for love of us, upon the cross. Avhich noAV is living, pulsing still for us in the bosom of our rien. glorified Redeemer. But who. in thought, can separate the heart from love? And so, my brethren, we worship here the love the infinite, incomprehensible loA-e, of the Son of God for us the love which he had for us all from eternity, when, as the second sec-ond person of the Blessed Trinity, he loA-ed us "with an eA-erlasting love" and that, other which filled the sacred heart at the moment of the incarnation all the loA-e of the God-Man for us, both human and divine, as symbolised in his sacred heart.
