With Tuesday nights 10-- loss to Alta, Cottonwoods Legionaires dropped to in the standings and are facing a playoff in the Valley League tournament on Saturday in order to earn a berth in state action to follow. Cottonwood also lost to to Taylorsville last Wednesday and 8 to Tooele Monday, but recorded wins over Hillcrest on Thursday and Judge 4 Friday. The teams final regular season slate includes in home matches against SouthWest today (Thursday) and Murray tomorrow (Friday). The top six valley teams, plus host Granite, get an automatic berth for state, while the next eight teams must playoff for one automatic berth and three playoff positions. 8 8-- 9 6 9-- 3-- 2 5-- Alta 10, Cottonwood led going into the top of the sixth, but Alta got six runs to move on top. Dave McQuivey ' swatted an RBI single, Craig Schmitke a two-ru- n run double to go along with a single by Brett Alvey, three walks and an error. 8-- 4 Tough Loss Hurts Granger GRANGER. A disastrous loss to West Jordan in eight innings by a score hurt Grangers chances of nailing down a state tournament berth the easy way. Granger beat Brighton 10-- for an deciimportant win, but iost an sion to league-leadin- g Kearns before falling to West Jordan Monday. Granger is three outs away from a win in a suspended game with East that will be resumed tonight (Thursday) and will wrap up action against Alta tomorrow and will either open action in the Valley League tournament Saturday or will await state action. 2 5 11-- 2 Granger 2 Leaving the bases loaded three times in the contest, Granger was Kurt finally victimized by a two-oMichelsen double after Danny Price had been intentionally passed. West Jordan had scored a pain of ' runs in the top of the fourth when Guy Fowkes and Scott Little had base hits, Prices double play ball was misplayed and Curtis George lifted a sacrifice fly. Granger answered right back in its half of the fourth when Scott Dalton and Rich Fratto delivered g blows. , George and Price combined for the mound win while Tracy Greenwood went the distance for Granger. Granger 10, Brighton 5 Granger went ahead to stay in the bottom of the second with a seven run burst. Kelly Peterson had a two-ru- n single and Dalton an RBI basehit with errors, passed balls and walks bringing in the rest. Granger then added single scores in the fourth, fifth and sixth as Pacheco, Crowton and Embley slapped out RBI singles. Brighton had one run in the top of the first on a Randy Wilstead single. Devin Kunz singled in two runs and Alex Mercer doubled in a third in the sixth. Brighton last run was posted in the seventh. Peterson pitched all seven innings for Granger. Brighton had nine hits to Grangers eight, but committed five errors. Track Honors Won MURRAY. Three firsts were captured by members of the Spartan Track Club from here during TAC Junior Olympic regional competition which concluded Thursday in Albuquerque, N. M. Competing in the 0 age division (Bantam), the clubs 4x100 meter relay team of Greg Banks, Jeff Francis, Tim Truman and Cal Beck logged a time of 56.99 seconds in capturing first place. Truman also claimed firsts in the triathlon and high jump, along with second in the long jump. Beck placed third in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. The Spartan Track Club is coached by Dennis Dawson. Tooele and Esplin doubled in two more. In the bottom of the seventh, Tooele tied when a fly ball was misjudged and dropped then moved ahead on an RBI single. Cottonwood 5, Judge shot to third then stepping on the bag for the double play. Hillcrest broke the ice with a run in the bottom of the second, scored on a sacrifice fly by Jim Riding. Cottonwood didnt get on the board until the fifth, scoring two runs on a single by Esplin and dropped fly ball. Hillcrest tied in the bottom half of the inning when John Pymm doubled and scored on a squeeze bunt by Swapp. Swapp later tried to score, but was gunned down from left field by Kenny Jewell. Cottonwood got the winning run in the sixth as Telford doubled and Brian Johnson singled him home. Brophy went the distance on the mound for Cottonwood, giving up five hits but throwing 13 ground ball outs. Cottonwood had six hits. Alan Ness, a grounder by Brophy scored one run, a single by Dana Telford a second and a double by Esplin two more. Judge picked up single runs in the first and fourth innings and finished with two in the top of the sixth. Judge threatened in the top of the seventh, but left the bases full. Cottonwoods first run was notched in the bottom of the fifth on a triple by Telford. Ness threw two innings to get the win in relief. Both teams had six hits total. n Cuthbert an RBI single and Ness an two-ru- n double in the second. Johnson doubled in two of the fourth inning runs. McQuivey was the winning pitcher, relieving Wilson in the fifth. Both had six strikeouts. Cottonwood had eight hits and Alta 14. The game was played under protest from the second inning. Cottonwood 8 West Jordan 4, and three in the fourth before Cottonwood got back on the board with four runs in the top of the fifth. Todd Esplin homered to start then Cottonwood loaded the bases for John Harris who hit a three-rudouble off the fence. Tooele got a run in the bottom half of the inning. Cottonwood tied it up then moved ahead in the top of the seventh with four more runs. Steve Cuthbert and Mike Robinson each singled in a run McQuivey also singled in two runs in the third to go with an RBI basehit by J.R. Wilson. Jeff Jensen knocked in a run in the first. Cottonwood got four runs in each of the second and fourth innings. Telford had a double, 4 Cottonwood fought back from a deficit with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. After loading the bases on two errors and a single by 1 no-h- Holladay Keeps State Hope Alive 10, Cottonwood 9 Six Cottonwood errors contributed to the upset. All three Tooele runs in the bottom of the fourth were unearned. Tooele had nine hits and COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS. Three victories, against one loss, kept Holladay in the hunt for a berth in the American Legion state tournament. After dropping a 3 decision to East Friday, Holladay completed up a Wednesday rainout Saturday by then finished stopping Midvale 7 strong, dispatching Bingham Tuesday. Monday and Brighton Sporting a 10-- 8 record, Holladay still has a shot at finishing in the top six and earning automatic berth to state. Should the team fall short, it would have to enter the Valley League tournament on Saturday. The results of Wednesdays game at Hillcrest and Friday against Granite at the UofU will tell the story. The third annual Fall Classic Softball tournament, sponsored by Murray City Recreation, will be held Aug. at the Murray Park softball diamond. This tournament is USSSA sanctioned and will be for class D teams. The tournament is limited to eight teams and will be double elimination. The winning team will receive a bid to the Class D National Tournament, held this year in Salt Lake. The first eight teams to turn in a roster and a fee of $70 will participate in the tournament. Trophies will be given to the first place winners and to the Most Valuable Player. All rosters and team fees must be turned in at the recreation office in Murray Park by the Aug. 15 deadline. Picking up only one run in each of its last two games, Murray continued to struggle in SouthWest American Legion action. As the host team for the upcoming state tournament, Granite draws an automatic berth. Presently, its league record is After Wednesdays game with Alta, Granite has just one more league contest to play, Friday against Holladay on the University of Utah field at 6 p.m. Cyprus, meanwhile, lost a couple to Bingham of hardluck contests, to Hillcrest last Wednesday and is currently Friday. Cyprus, dueling with Hillcrest, among others, for the sixth place berth to state. In the third Ken Hoskison tripled and Stubbs and Tovey singled. After gaining two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Travis Meyerhoffer, Granite shot past Midvale with seven runs in the fifth. Tony Jimenez singled in two, while RBI basehits went to Craig Thomas and Kyle Marchant. Dave Davis slapped out a two-rusingle, Darrel Cole and RBI double and Thomas another run scoring single in a five-ru- n sixth. Marchant threw all six innings for Granite, strilking out five, but giving up eight hits.
