Show IB Satisfying The Creative Urge WEST VALLEY. Hobbies. To some of us, they are the things we do as a change-of-pac- e from everyday activities, for relaxation, for fun. To others, they may be an extension of their regular work, a related activity that is perhaps more enjoyable than the daily grind, but still in the same area of interest. To still others, they may open the door to a new interest, skill or even a new career. Whatever the motive, almost everyone has some kind of hobby, and usually, they do it for fun. Hobbies can be fun and gratifying, statisfying the creative urge while filling ones leisure time with rewarding activities, says the Hobby Information Bureau, a media resource center for the Hobby In dustries of America. Local hobby enthusiasts agree. Everyone needs a hobby of some kinds," says Alton Baxter of West Valley City. For me, that means something I can do with my hands. Ive read the good life should be a combination of yearning, earning and learning, and I think hobbies can help fulfill all three areas, said Vivian Milius of Kearns. Baxter, who has a woodshop at his home, used to teach woods in Oregon, taught woodshop and metals at Central junior high and Granger high, taught shop classe for handicapped at the Granite district rehab center and taught special education students for seven years at Kennedy junior high. Now retired, he noted that the last 15 years, working with handicapped youngsters, were the years he most enjoyed. Those kids were good to work with and it was great to watch them ' Thursday, July - 31, 1986 From Everyday Activities Hobbies: Change-of-pac- e by Olga Milius Green Sheet Staff Writer THE GREEN SHEET achieve," he said. Baxter is continuing his love of "working with my hands in his home shop, and is beginning to accept orders from people in the community who need a job done. His slogan is Baxters Can-D- o Shop - if you have a need, we can do the deed. He makes toys, including a wide variety of wooden trucks, games, doll cradles and furniture; does cabinet work, remodeling, and custom made items for the home and enjoys the entire process. He also handles welding jobs. He built a motor home for his family, which sees a lot of use every summer as the "family visits relatives in Oregon or Idaho. He and his wife Marian, also a former Granite district teacher, have three daughters and 10 grandseven girls and three children, boys, he says proudly. iyrs. Milius is into a lot of things, sort of apprentice at all and master at none, she said. She sews for her two daughters, Laura, 3, and Jasmine, 1; quilts, is working on a porcelain doll, paints, draws and even makes sculpture pieces. Asked to name her favorite hobby, she said, Whatever Im doing right now," but her dream is to become really good in art, drawing and painting. Her home is decorated with her own paintings and with and drapes she has made. Dreaming of someday, she has developed four plans of how she would like to remodel her home, even making scale-size- d cut-ouof furniture to in the rooms. place Since husband Steve enjoys working with his hands, as Mr. Baxter called it, and enjoys woodwork, they hope to put their hobbies to use slip-cove- ts someday and develop those plans to us." in- Vivians dream is to complete paintings taken from old, as well as new, family pictures. Whether its tole painting, racing cars, participating in adventure games, or taking up any one of the myriad hobbies so popular today, theres certainly one that is just right for you, Hobby Information Bureau officials say. One of the best ways to find a hobby, they note, is to visit a convenient hobby shop. Many hobby store owners got into the business because of an overwhelming interest in their own hobbies, and now welcome the opportunity to share their enthusiasm. Prospective hobbyists can find a hands-oopportunity to try something when hobby stores offer demonstrations as, for example, making silk flowers, working with Continued on page 9 reality. As a young mother, I try to make games and things for my children. What every mother needs is a weekly preparation day just to do that," said Vivian. Except if I had such a day, Id probably spend it cleaning and reading, she laughed. I think any hobby a person tries is a good introduction to an appreca-tio- n of art in its many forms, she said. Working with pottery helps one to notice glazes, colors, and shapes, she pointed out. Sewing gives an appreciation of textures, fine handiwork, fitting and, again, color. Painting teaches an apprecation of symmetry, perspective, design and, again, color and texture, she observ- radio-controlle- d n ed.
