Show 7 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, July 31, 1986 AS WE SEE IT Don Your Film Buff Bib, Feast On Streep, Gleason, King by Mark Cartwright & B.J. Harrison Green Sheet Entertainment Critics Gleason plays Max who has lost his job, his wife (Eva Marie Saint) has left him after 38 years of marriage and his son, Hanks, is estranged from him. There are some funny moments, but the dramatic scenes wherein Max must communicate his true feelings and his son must reexamine his priorities make Nothing in Common a movie with heart and one we recommend. If youre looking for a pure comedy, where better to look than toGene Wilder, Gilda Radner, and Dom DeLuise as they deliver the laughs in Haunted Honeymoon. Its 1939 and Wilder and Radner are the stars of the number one radio show in the country and they are getting married this weekend at a gothic mansion on Long Island owned by Aunt Kate (DeLuise in Drag). Along with the phobias Wilder acquires several weeks before the wedding, the film also boasts a werewolf, one or two murders, weird servants and an oddball family gathered for the wedding. and directed by Wilder, Haunted Honeymoon is a tour de force for its three stars and the au- - When it comes to studio releases, this week was a veritable feast at the movies and in the video stores with everything from Meryl Streep to Jackie Gleason to Stephen King and Chuck Norris. One surprise we received was from Mann Theaters by way of a trailer theyre running before the feature. It shows a character talking while the rest of the audience is trying to hear the movie. While most movie goers are there for the movie, theres always a few who insist on carrying on personal conversations while the film is running. These rude, inconsiderate few are not the ones the audience paid to d hear. As We See It applauds Mann Theaters for addressing this problem and, hopefully, the offenders will get the message. Jackie Gleason and Tom Hanks turn in funny and sensitive performances as a father and son who truly have Nothing in Common. Giving his best performance since Gigot and Soldier in the Rain, dience. For those who prefer horror, bestselling author Stephen King steps behind the camera for his first outing as a director with Maximum Overdrive, which is less slice and dice and more smack and splat. A comet passes by the earth causing all manner of machinery from meat slicers to trucks to go into maximum overdrive with their goal being to kill humans. King keeps his audiences attention by creating the right horrific effects paced to the films mood. The casting is superb and King keeps most of the action confined to a truckstop diner which intensifies the mood. Maximum Overdrive is pure Stephen King from start to finish. Walter Matthau, an extraordinary actor, is trapped in an extraordinarily awful movie directed by Roman Palanski. If you like the old swashbuckler type of film about pirates and mutineers, run, dont just walk, away from Pirates. Matthau talks like someone from Brooklyn with a hot potatoe in his mouth trying desperately to sound British while the rest of the cast ap to be trying to figure which direction this alleged film is going. Polanski has never done a worse job of directing, and it seems as if he isnt sure if he wants comedy or high seas action and adventure. So he tried for both and got neither. We will say, however, that the sea gave the best performance in the picture. Pirates is a woofer. Video stores should have filled up their reservation lists with the release of Delta Force starring Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris as the leaders of an elite squad trained to deal with hostage situations. Its pears based on the very real TWA-Beirhijacking and Robert Forsters portrayal of Jamal, the fanatical terrorist, really steals the show. Hitcher, the story of a homicidal hitchhiker, is one of the best thrillerhorror videos around. Exciting, tense and entertaining, Hitcher is a real winner, not to be missed by those who enjoy a solid story with a high body count. Like you, I, too, remember how fun it was to march with my school bands. We were not the best, but, we sure put our heart into it. Now days it is hard to find real commitment to the band organizations in the schools in the valley. In our particular high school, of which I feel you were talking about in your article, we worked overtime to pull together a band to march in the 4th and 24th of July parades. Our director was at rehearsals each day, without fail, but, the most students we could manage to round up were 17. Rather than embarass the school, the decision was made not to march. I, myself, spent a number of mornings and evenings trying to help pull the band together. I did everything from make phone calls to play drums, because of having only one drummer the whole summer. As another mother and I made these phone calls, we came to the conclusion that neither the students nor their parents had a real commitment to the band; 70 percent of the students we called were going to be out of town for the parades. Their parents didn't care if they supported the band or not. The others were too busy or had to work the holidays or just didnt care. I feel that even if a student does apply for a summer job, if he tells his employer, that first day, that he two needs those days off work m - 328-424- FRIDAY THE 13th PART Vim 0 3 HtlD HAUNTED HONEYMOON (pci CUll HIT Every Weekend 8 AM till 4 PM FREE PARKING FREE ADMISSION MURRAY FAIR GROUNDS 5250 So. 2nd East - Murray Vendors Call 571-540- 5 Credit for the course will be available through the D.C.E. office at theUofU. My feeling has been, that, if youre committed to a program, you see that you are available whenever you are needed. This type of commitment is evident where the school choirs are concerned. All choir members, and many parents, never miss a scheduled performance. In other states the band is a very important organization to youth, parents and administrators. Here it seems to get second place attempts from all three of the above. In one New Mexico band, parents have already raised $2,000 for their band this summer. The students have been practicing two hours, five days a week since school let out, every member shows up to every scheduled event, even though the band leader has not been able to be there for the first two months. Thats commitment. I would love to see a new surge of energy hit our high school bands. Anyone who watched the 4th of July activities in New York knows it was the big bands that really brought the spirit of the day to the country. What happened to the days when a student was really proud to march in a parade and his parents were really proud to be there watching him?
