Show THE GREEN SHEET 6 Thursday, July 31, 1986 Granger Field Continued from page 1 first board meeting after that -probably around the end of August or early September, he speculated. The committee, he noted, had asked for time on a board agenda in June, but we wernt quite ready then. We needed to study it more and most of the committee felt it wouldnt be a good idea to have two construction projects going on at the same time. The Granger committee, he said, is aiming at a similar plan to what theyre doing at Skyline. The Skyline plan has the community s of the cost, picking up with the district paying the remaintwo-third- ing one-thir- We think ours might cost a little more than Skyline, Coombs said. 'The district has committed $19,000 to their project, with the community doubling that figure. efSome trivial forts were conducted by the committee last spring with both Granger students and a booth at the West Valley Days celebration, he said, but once we get the boards approval, well start to press the business community and go home to home. The Skyline committee divided volunteers into 10 groups with a captain over each division. They divided the territory among those 10 groups and hit up every business and home in the attendance area. We plan to do the same thing here. While ideas are being formulated, specifics for the project itself have yet to be determined, Coombs said. The Skyline committee has been working with us concerning the technology they're using, but that point is still not settled things as the type of poles or candlepower. Im assuming the district has standards for this sort of thing. Coombs said lighting probably couldnt be installed in time for the Homecoming game. They need at least 60 days after the cement is poured (for the light bases) before fund-raisin- fund-raisin- g g District 5 Post poles can be installed, he said. The committee wants to make the area a focal point of West Valley," he explained. Along with anticipated improvements at Granger park adjacent to the high school site, improvements at the school "can make the area a real community center. Thats a primary goal behind lighting the field, he said. Whats happening in education is there is a move to do away with extracurricular activities and charge special fees." Funds generated by football and baskeball help underwrite other activities, he explained. Our major goal, I suppose, is to encourage community support for the school. By having night games, its possible we can bring more people out and help increase revenues. Coombs pointed out that last years highest gate receipt at Granger was $2,200 and we were region champs and got into the state playoffs. Skyline, on the other hand, topped out at $3,500 when they played at Davis under the lights. Lighting the field, he speculated, could not only raise revenues, but also increase community support for the school. Football lighting is just a start, he said. There are plenty of other projects we could do to improve Granger high. When the lighting is done, well look at all of the other projects to see which one well pursue next. The committee is looking for about 100 volunteers to help with the effort. Anyone interested in helping out would certainly be welcome, Coombs noted. Those interested in participating in the effort or who would like to donate toward the fund-raisin- g fund-raisin- lighting g project may contact Coombs at We really need all the help we can get, he said. This is a community effort to enhance our own community and no one is going to do it for us but ourselves. 969-192- - Christensen Seeks To Board Re-electi- on GRANGER. J.
