Davis is the defending state champion, while their opponents are the Murray Spartans who won the grid title a couple of years ago. ACTUALLY then it was the Spartans that the Darts dethroned last year, although it wasnt in the championship game, so this year the Murray squad would love nothing better than to repay the favor and take the title back again. The Darts didnt have an easy time getting to the elite with a very inspired Judge club last week in the semifinals. The Darts came out on top but not before the Bulldogs had put a scare into them before finally bowing Murray wasnt having an easy time either as they had to turn away a very good Ogden club 14-So both teams had to play right down to the final gun to 14-1- 6. get into the finals. ONE WOULD have to wonder how Ryan Hill, the in- jured quarterback for the Davis team feels at this time. He must feel somewhat like Gifford Neilsen of BYU in that both were leading their teams effectively, then were lost through injuries only to see other signal callers step in and just take right over. In BYUs case it was a sophomore redshirt named Wilson and in the Davis case it was a junior named Van Brocklin. Both substitutes were thrown into the fire and both have performed well. Van Brocklin was the leader of the junior varsity bunch but no one really knew what he could do with the varsity boys. Rest assured you Dart fans, he can handle the club. Prior to their game with Judge last week the Davis coaches in 1977 dicated that the first series of downs would go a long way in determining the success that Todd Van Brocklin would have in guiding the team. WELL THE first time they got their hands on the pigskin, the Darts put points up on the board as fullback Keith Mal-na- r found a huge hole in the Judge defense and rambled 61 yards to paydirt. Following an offside call on the extra point conversion the Darts, without their kicker Hill, went for the two points and again it was Malnar finding the hole over the right side. Coach Cullimore had indicated that Van Brocklin had a good throwing arm and the Davis people used that to their advantage in their second score as Todd hit Troy Howard with a perfect pass over the middle for 50 yards down to the Judge three yard line. From there Mr. Malnar again hauled the ball into the end zone. Their two point conversion failed this time and the Darts led 14-- and appeared to have everything going their 0 way. IN THE second half it was one of those classic Judge-Davi- s thrillers that people have become accustomed to witnessing throughout the years. Judge pulled with a touchdown of the Darts in the third period with a fine run and then converted the PAT. The Bulldogs polled within one point with about three minutes to play when they recovered a Davis fumble in the Dart end zone, the extra point was no good however and the Darts still had their one point lead. Following the kickoff the Darts did what they do best in running the clock out with their patented ball control offense. THAT SETS up this weeks battle with Murray. The Spartans are a much bigger club physically than the Darts. The Murray front wall averages about 200 pounds while the Darts probably don't have" anyone who approaches that mark. Murray boasts a great runner in Rocky Ullibari who rushed for 170 yards against Ogden, while the Darts boast about three good runners in Malnar, Mitch Keck and Dave Lloyd. Brian Winters, the starting quarterback for the Spartans was injured against the Tigers last week but is expected to play, while Van Brocklin will again be at the helm and with his initial battle behind him, Todd should come on strong. Murray club is big and likes to run at people while the smaller Davis team likes to run at, through and around with deception a big part of their game plan. THE BIG linemen for the Murray crew wont be afforded the luxury of having time to make decisions when the double wing comes at them, if their reaction time is slow the AMERICAN S FOREIGN CAR SPfCIAUSTS MR. Meanwhile all the Dart defenders have to do is stop the Ullibari show. I probably shouldnt say all they have to do is stop it because very few clubs have been able to stop this great attack. Tradition and pride go to the Davis club, while the Murray team are anxious to get back that title the Darts took from them last year. Davis doesnt want to give it back though. r roiiPONcrrr: this $ COUPON WORTH Other Jobs 10 OFF Our Already Low Price Jan. School.
