CLARK President Davis County Bank This English chap, Freddie Laker, first broke the price barrier on economy flights to England when he New his started at $236 Skytrain shuttle in October round trip! Six other air York-Londo- lines which fly the in- route, cluding American TWA, come up n Pan and have with comclosely round-tri- p petitive fares of $256 free including meals. The Sky-trai- n sells food. Compared with the $1,312 first class or the $626 basic economy fare, the new low round-tri- p prices pretty well shout: If you ever wished, hoped or threatened to take a trip overseas, nows the time to do it. While these bargain basement fares are in effect (although holiday periods are excepted), its a buyers market and a great time to travel abroad in the United Kingdom or Ireland to visit family, friends, ancient castles or the Old Sod. This is especially true if you want to fly over and then rent a car and drive from place to place on your own. Most people are aware of the new low air fares. But Im going to sound another money-savin- g note thats not It generally heard or known here. should serve to send you packin. This is a delightful way to cut down on your hotel bill when you travel in Ireland or the U.K. It is by using whats known as a guest house or more colorfully, bed and breakfast. Not since days in the United States when motorists would stop at a tourist home have we seen anything like a British or Irish B&B. The idea of a bed and breakfast is simply a family renting its spare room or rooms to you in city or country and then cooking breakfast for you just as it would for personal friends. In London, the average cost of a B&B is about $12 per adult per night. Costs drop as low as $5.25 (including breakfast of course) in the Irish countryside. As a rule, B&Bs in the big cities and those close to the airports are more expensive than the more remote guest houses. But all are great pre-mot- bargains compared with standard hotels and motels. Thats not the whole story. The contacts you make with individuals and families who run guest houses seem far more enriching and rewarding to the traveler than contacts with professional service people at hotels. B&B proprietors are usually happy to sit and chat with you, giving directions or describing local customs and local history. No tipping is expected or required, either. That morning meal at a B&B is not Continental breakfast, by the way. It's not just coffee and a roll. A B&B breakfast typically consists of juice, cereal, eggs, sausage or bacon, homemade bread, coffee or tea. B&Bs theyre wonderful especially for the traveler who wants to fly and drive in Britain or Ireland. Nows the time to do it, at bargain prices. |
