Roy Evans, administrator of Pupil Personnel said that these kinds of learning problems are being investigated and met by resource teams in each school. the elementary schools, although the secondary schools receive some preventative help, Mr. Evans said. The psychologists dont provide much, therapy since most of their time is taken up with evaluation, according to Mr. Evans. However, if a bizarre type of behavior develops, the child is provided with a battery of tests, which provide a quick overview of the problems prior to therapy. IF THE TEACHER in the classroom feels the child has additional problems, that must be met, he is recommended for testing by one of the six school district psychologists. The clinical testing battery provides information in a number of areas, varying from the childs skills in 20 CHRISTMAS GREETING CARDS Select from traditional, religious and novelty designs, 20 cards, all one design, per box, reg 97 GIFT TAGS, CARDS, SEALS Huge Yuletide Assortment" of colorful tags, cards and seals, 230 pieces in all, 1.00 val IN SOME cases, testing is provided at the Monte Vista Diagnostic Clinic in Farmington. Mr. Evans said, when the problem is severe, the child is referred to the diagnostic clinic or to the health department so he can receive help on a higher level of expertise. THIS HELP is correlated through a resource team in each school, Mr. Evans : said. The school principal sees the test results and then meets in a conference . with the psychologist, the social worker, the resource teacher, the regular teacher and the parents of the child. At times the ; public health nurse is also included with : the resource team. This team comes up with possible solu; ? IN MOST cases, the child who needs special help in academic subjects is assigned to a resource teacher who is an expert in teaching in skill areas such as language arts or math. There is at least one such teacher in each school. Mr. Evans said that more resource teachers are needed, but that the school district doesnt have enough money to provide more teachers in each school. Students in need of special help due to learning disabilities spend some time in classrooms with the resource teachers but move into the regular school program for other classes. This concept, called allows the child to have a greater variety of experiences and develop his communication skills, tions to help the child resolve his problems so he can get on with the learning process, Mr. Evans said. The resource teacher is specifically trained to coach the student in academic subjects and is specifically trained to teach those with learning disabilities. Mr.-Evan- ITS IMPORTANT that we have the parents knowledge and help, Mr. Evans said. Very rarely do the parents refuse because they see that their child is getting the advantages of additional help. In cases where parents refuse to cooperate, legal measures can be taken, Mr. Evans said, although these cases are rare. Although district social workers are assigned to each resource team, the principal is ultimately responsible for the resource team, since the principal must ultimately answer to the parents of the child. No child is recommended for testing unless he is referred by either the teacher or the parents. In some isolated cases the child might be recommended for a clinical evaluation by the Division of Family Services (DFS) or by the juvenile court, but these cases are not the usual. said. are a few classrooms in schools throughout the district, where children with emotional, hearing, or mental handicaps are taught, the bulk of the children are in special classes only for a portion of the day. They are then mainstreamed into regular classes. Mr. Evans said that the Public Law which will provide funding for those with learning disabilities will generate some money for the school district. He said funding for the handicapped' will bring increased funds into Davis School District for the next five years. h THIS LAW requires direct money to be distributed to local districts when the districts meet certain specifications, for providing individualized programs to the handicapped.
