Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NOVEMBER 1 7, 1 977 The Layton Jaycettes held their November membership By ROSELYN KIRK (This is the first on a four-pa- rt series on aging) With over 6,800 older adults in Davis County, the Council on Aging has a wide variety of services to perform in attempting to meet the needs for a large segment of the population who fall between the ages of 60 and 90. ON NOVEMBER 1 the Council on Aging began an effort to locate senior citizens and, through a special Outreach program staffed by part-tim- e workers, to make , personal contacts with each. The council believes that many would benefit through the community programs that can be provided through the Senior Citizens Centers in Bountiful and Clearfield. Alice Johnson, administrator of the Council on Aging, pointed out while a government agency cant be everything to everybody, the council can help the family to provide necessary services. Ultimately the family has the responsibility, if the person has a family, but our function is to help. MRS. JOHNSON feels that the department will be more able to meet the needs of the aging as the result of a study conducted by Wasatch Opinion Research Corporation. This organization inter-- , viewed a sample group of residents over 60 to come up with data which shows the needs of the older segment of the population. According to Mrs. Johnson, the study shows that the problems most difficult for people in the age group to resolve are doing house and yard work. In relation to that need, 85.5 percent said that they felt home health care would be an alternative to nursing homes. or single senior citizens were more likely to use the nutrition program. Health problems were listed as the most pressing need by those in the age group. Those over 80 years old indicated meeting on Nov. 1. Certificates of Appreciation were given to Kathy Adams, Betsy Clouse and Reva Muir arthritis; age 82, does not speak or understand English; and age 64, good health but doesnt drive. Mrs. Johnson said that while only about 11 percent of the senior citizens considered themselves to be in very poor health, about 30 percent said they needed a special diet. Rheumatism and arthritis were listed as the most serious health problem by 63 percent of those surveyed, while heart trouble, diabetes, eye and ear problems, foot problems and circulatory ailments were listed next in order. 70-7- 9 that health problems, loneliness and transportation were their most pressing needs. In the age group from 60 to 69 age group probably resulted from the fact that this age group was either retiring or was contemplating retirement and during that transitional age, worried about how to finance this retirement. Transportation was mentioned as a need most often by single respondents who lived in the north. Mrs. Johnson said, in an analysis of passenger service for September, statistics showed that 77 different people were transported either to the centers, to receive health care facilities or to supply other needs.
