Letters to the Editor Generous Donations for Troops Appreciated Dear Ogden Valley residents, thank you so very much for your generous donations to our troops serving overseas. Your gifts of food products, toiletries, and other miscellaneous items will bring a touch of home while they are spending their holidays abroad. A debt of gratitude goes to the following locations here in Ogden Valley that so graciously allowed the dropoff boxes to be placed: Valley Market, Huntsville Post 129 American Legion, Valley Elementary, Snowcrest Jr. High, and the Ogden Valley Library. Susie Gordon of Eden was instrumental in the making the whole idea work. She compiled lists of acceptable items to be sent, made posters and artwork, set up the drop-off boxes, picked up items, and helped pack and mail them to the troops. Melissa and Ida Frogh of Huntsville took time out of their busy schedules and braved inclement weather to pack and mail boxes so that the packages would reach the troops in a timely manner. Thanks to all the ladies at the post office, especially, Krista Lyon, for getting the packages all mailed out! Thanks to those who donated everything, including money for postage! It all came together and will brighten many soldiers’ day this holiday season! Father Cummins, St. Florence Catholic Church Melissa Frogh and Susie Gordon with donated items being sent to troops. Preparing for Winter - It could save you from a big headache As I was driving down the canyon with snow beginning to fall, I was reminded that it’s time to winterize our vehicles. Valley residents are usually helpful and stop to aid stranded vehicles; however, being prepared, and having a few things on hand is important during an emergency. May I suggest the following: 1. Flashers – I know it sounds remedial, but I have encountered people in need of assistance that are in the road blocking traffic, and they haven’t put on their flashers. Put your flashers on! Passing vehicles will have a better chance of seeing you, especially in bad weather. 2. Spare Tires—Make sure your spare is still in good shape and full of air. Also, make sure that your jack and tire iron match your vehicle. Three people stopped to help a stranded truck that didn’t have the appropriate tools. None of us had tools that would match his vehicle. 3. Familiarize yourself with the names of our highways and streets—at least the major ones. Even if you have a cell phone, you will need to be able to inform responders of where you are. 4. Check your insurance for tow packages, or sign up for AAA towing. The cost of one tow from Ogden Valley to town will pay for this peace of mind. 5. Have rope on board to help with pulling out vehicles. Beware of where you place the rope or chain when pulling out a stuck vehicle. Many a tie rod and axle have been bent/destroyed by placing ropes and chains in the wrong position—so have many a bumper. 6. My mechanic suggested having a little Ice Melt of some sort on board, along with a small shovel to aid when you get stuck. 7. Have blankets, jackets, water, munchies, and a cell phone/recharger in your car in case you are stranded for awhile. 8. Don’t let your gas tank fall below a half tank to prevent condensation with the cooler temperatures. 9. And, of course, have your vehicle serviced regularly, with oil changes every 3,000 miles and fluids checked. This will go a long way in preventing vehicles from breaking down unexpectedly. 10.Carry a flashlight in your vehicle. 11. Emergency flares. One last thing, please respect each other on the road. The person in front of you driving knows what they can handle, and how their vehicle drives—Please don’t hug their rear end! More space can prevent lots of unnecessary accidents. And, please, let faster traffic pass if you can. You never know, they may be trying to get to the hospital to have a baby! Thank you and have happy, safe holiday.
