Show Volume XV Issue I The Ogden Valley news Page 15 December 15, 2007 Local Organization Hosts North Ogden Pass Uphill Trail Run— Groom area cross-country skiers The Ogden Nordic Chapter of The Utah Nordic Alliance is an organization that uses the North Ogden Pass Uphill Trail Run as a team recruitment tool and a fundraiser for the Ogden Nordic Junior Ski Team. This year the cross-country skiing organization had a very successful race, raising monies and signing up Eden resident Paige Montgomery, age 15, who set the new Women’s course record with a time of 28 minutes and 52 seconds, “Which is absolutely flying up that mountain,” according to Paul Stromberg, Director of the Junior ski team. Other notable times where runners placed high in their respective age categories, and athletes who have joined the Junior ski program, are Graham Stromberg, Erik Lyons, Karlee Deeter, Allyson Deeter, Cole Stromberg, Jaine Montgomery, Melissa Warren, Russel Davis, Carson Stromberg, Jack Davis, and Francis Davis. Ogden Nordic Junior Team hosts a Learn to Ski program for youth as young as 8 years old and on through about 12 years. The Development program includes youth through about 15 years of age, and the Competitive group has youth spanning a variety of ages through 18 years of age. They practice at North Fork Park in Liberty. Competitions are held at Soldier Hollow, White Pine, and Mountain Dell. In November of 2006, Layton decided to get serious about it, and began training for the 2007 St. Croix Ocean Swim that was held in October. There are three categories in the Ocean Swim: 3 person relay, fin group, and solo swim. Competing in the relay this year were three Olympic Gold Medalists who swam together as a team: Rowdy Gains, Amanda Beard, and Margaret Hoelzer. They finished third. In the solo category that Brad competed in, there were about 112 competitors. Beginning the race together; only 85 completed the grueling event. While Layton didn’t place in the event, his wife said she was pleased that he was able to finish. Layton says that he is going to continue his training efforts, and will compete again next year. Brad and his wife Cathie stated, “We’d like to thank our friends the Maxwell’s and Truett’s for traveling with us for the event.” Cathie added, “And for supporting Brad’s mid-life crisis; it was a blast!” Brad Layton and his wife Cathie.
