Coach Blair Martineaus Cottonwood high cagers came up with their best defensive effort of the season Friday must win and picked up a 4 SOUTH 58-4- over Granite at home. Martineau, whose team will host Cyprus tomorrow (Friday) at 7:30 p.m., said before the Granite game that every home contest in Region Three is almost a must-wi- n situation because road wins will be hard to come by. The Colts will host an improved Skyline team Tuesday night at7:30. ' Granite will travel to Granger tomorrow night for a 7:30 tipoff before returning home for a 7:30 p.m. game with Cyprus Tuesday. . Granite Coach Charlie Whiting said his team lacked intensity throughout the contest with Cottonwood and that the Farmers Shooting percentage (30) was the worst of the year. It was just one of those nights, he said. Cottonwood jumped out to a 13-- 6 lead after one quarter, but the Farmers hit three straight baskets at the end of the half to creep back within two, at In the second half, Martineau said his squad turned in its best defensive effort of the year, taking the Farmers out of their offense and limiting them to eight third-quartpoints. 8 The Colts led after three periods and pulled away in the fourth quarter when they hit their free throws following several Granite fouls. Boyd Matheson paced the Cottonwood scoring attack with 16 points (7,2x4), while Steve Schone added 12 (6,0x0). Sammy Lee (5,0x2)and Steve Trost (5,0x0) shared scoring honors for Granite with 10 points apiece. Martineau said Granite was probably a little lethargic coming into 22-2- 36-2- the game because of its victory over Skyline last week. He said sometimes a team needs a loss, rather than a win to fire it up. He is not, however, worried that his team will not be fired up against Cyprus tomorrow. Were not relaxed at all because we want to get into the state he said. These next tournament, two games at home are really the key for us. Were ready to play. Cottonwoods Region Three record is in Whiting, whose team is league play, says his team must win tomorrow at Granger in order to get back into the thick of things. We have a lot of home games in the second half of the' season, so if we can win this one, well be in good shape, he said. 3 That was the assessment of Coach Kenyon Clark of a pair of losses his team suffered during the week in concluding the first half of league play at The Cougars lost a heartbreaker Friday night, 4 to Alta on the Kearns court. At West Jordan on Tuesday, Kearns squandered an half-tim- e lead and lost a 7 decision. That brings the Cougars around to the tough part of the slate again. They must host Hillcrest tomorrow (Friday), then travel to Bingham on Tuesday. Clark admitted it is a frustrating situation. In the past, we havent had a prayer against most of the teams in our region, but this is the best team Ive had in six years and its losing the games it should win. none-too-hap- 0-- 75-7- 65-5- Jags 65, Cougars 57 We had a hard time finding a way to lose this one, Clark assessed Wednesday morning. The Cougars did everything right in the first half. Kearns expanded a d 6 lead into a edge and appeared well on the way to its first league win.. With 3:26 left in the third period, the Cougars still led by eight. But when that period ended, Kearns trailed 6 and in the fourth period, West Jordan converted 14x17 charity tosses into the victory. It was a nightmare, Clark said. The Cougars outscored their hosts but by two goals from the field, hit 15x24 from the line while the Jags were netting 27x36. And while Kearns had an okay 16 turnovers, 11 of those came in the late going. The Cougars controlled the boards Ron Johnson led all scorers with 18 points. Kearns was paced by Brett Falk with 15 (6,3x3). Jeff Pace muscled in 12 (4,4x8). Skyline claimed its first league victory Friday night at the expense of Granger. The Eagles won a dull 1 decision from the Lancers. Granger faces a pair of contests this week, concluding the first round of league play with a key test of Granite. The Lancers enter that contest with a record, while the Farmers are On Tuesday the Lancers will host an Olympus team that blew them off the court in the league opener. Granger never really got untracked at Skyline. With leading scorer Jeff Willardson shackled, the Lancers were unable to take advantage of the desperate situation the Eagles were in - having lost their first three contests, two at home, without having met powerful Olympus. The Eagle situation is still not glorious. Grangers hopes for postseason play may hinge on Fridays meeting with Granite, and if Grangers doesnt, Granites does, having lost to Cottonwood Friday. 49-4- At Skyline the Lancers trailed 10-after one period and at halftime. They fell one more point behind in the third period, trailing to open the final e stretch. 8 2 22-1- 8 34-2- 9 eight-minut- Game scoring honors went to Skylines Dave Grant with 14. Thats a big rivalry and theyre starting to play a lot better lately, Huber said. Olympus 23 more shots than Cyprus, which, according to Pirate Coach Mark Wilson, was the the key to the game. We played pretty well, Wilson said, noting his team shot 54 percent from the field and 85 percent from the line. I feel good about that. Huber said reserve guard Mark Sperry played a key role in the victory despite not showing up in the box scores. We always get a solid game from him, Huber said. We could start him, but he does such a great job coming off the bench for us that we keep him there. Its really like having six starters," he said.
