The advanced placement program is steadily growing at Kearns high and we are encouraging students to consider signing up for classes in the AP program as they make their choices of classes for next year, commented Dick Jenkel, teacher at Kearns. The program provides students the opportunity to take college-leve- l classes while still in high school. After a year of study, the student has the option of taking an advanced placement test for classes completed and, if he passes, can earn 12 hours of college credit. AP biology is being taught by Richard Teerlink, who said he is concerned about the quality of education and believes AP classes are a solution to the problem since they tend to raise academic standards. Tom Larson teaches AP chemistry, which he feels attracts good students and is well worthwhile. AP English is taught by Loren Johnson, who feels the program is a challenge and lets him see st udents grasp and develop ideas. Beverly Olson, who teaches AP American and AP European history, first taught advanced placement classes at Granite high in 1968, helping to develop the program. Jim Walker said the AP calculus program is the highest math class available at Kearns, attracting the school's top math scholars. Eighteen students are presently enrolled in AP Spanish, which, according to teacher Lorraine Linares, is a record for both Kearns high and Granite district. "The class offers a good way to learn the language and prepare for possible college credit," she noted. All AP teachers expect from The great pleasure in life doing what people say you cannot do. is Walter Bagehot percent of the AP students to pass the placement tests. With registration coming up in the near future, students are strongly encouraged to consider the AP courses which offer them an excellent chance to succeed in life. A solid background in these classes will help students prepare to earn good grades and succeed in many areas," Mr. Jenkel noted. Try a Green Sheet Want . Ad!
