Sparrows in the vicinity of Hillsdale elementary are finding life during this severe winter a little easier as a result of a unit on wildlife survival. Third grade students were introduced to the unit as a means of implementing a research project, explained teacher Kathy Horne. This is the first time the children have made use of the encyclopedias, she said, and, to facilitate their learning to use the books for research, each student was asked to select an animal that lives outdoors, in the wild, and to research information about it. Students went through a unit on . grease, then rolled in wild bird seed. The children then hammered a nail into the top of each can and attached string and the feeders were hung outside the classroom windows. May sparrows come and feed each day, she added, but the students are so interested in watching them that (See Page 5B, Col.l) taking notes and writing reports and were then required to do their research and use their notes to make a report, written as a factual story, about the animal of their choice. The unit included proof reading and students were required to correct their reports for spelling and punctuation and to include a drawing of the animal. A highlight of the unit was the building of bird feeders, Mrs. Home noted. William (Wally) Smith has been selected teacher of the month for December and January at Kearns high. Smith, who teaches chemistry, physiology, zoology and biology, was teacher of the year last year. He has been teaching at Kearns for 13 years, his first and only teaching post since graduating from Brigham Young University. He also coaches track and is adviser to the science club. . He and his wife Dawn are parents of two sons, Chad, 9, and Blake, 6. I would like to encourage all our students to sign up for science classes. We have an excellent program in science at KHS.
