Show PUN TO INCREASE MEMBERSHIP ROLL E. A. Wedgwood Camp No. 1, U. S. W. Veterans, Holds Meeting. Members of B. A. "Wedgwood camp No. 1, United Spanish "War Veterans, last night held an interesting meeting in their quarters at the N. G. U. armory, discussed dis-cussed with much earnestness plans for bringing the membership of the society up to the position they asserted it should hold and resolved to work to that end without delav and unceasingly. About forty men were present, a dozen or more being not now active members of the organization, some having neglected to comply with the reqlrements and some having dropped out when the transition was made from the old organization of the Philippine veterans to the broader society. At the conclusion of the session it was agreed that the next meeting he held on the evening of the second Tuesday Tues-day fn October, with the special committee, com-mittee, consisting of Elmer C. Thomas, Daniel H. Drines and H. A. McMillin, remaining in charge of the active membership mem-bership campaign. It was pointed out during the progress of the meeting last evening that there are at least 360 men residing in or near Salt Lake who are qualified by reason of their enlistment to enter this society of veterans. vet-erans. Not more than one-fourth of this number are now active members, hence the campaign Is on to "bring into the fold" those who have strayed away or failed to join at all. Adjutant A. J. Mechin presided at the session last night and Quartermaster H. A. McMillin was secretary. Mr. McMillin told of how the committee had sent out letters to a large number of ellgibles and had received replies from about 50 per cent of those addressed. Chairman Mechin in opening said that the time had come when the complete organization of the S pa n isn War Veterans was highly desirable, as they must soon step into the place so long occupied by the members of the G. A. R. in many humanitarian and public lines of duty. Captain Emil Johnson John-son of the police force, a sergeant with the Utah battery during the Spanish war, strongly urged that every man who was qualified enter the organization, and Past Commander J. H. Ball eloquently pointed out the essentiality of service as an organization, or-ganization, laying particular stress upon the duties incident to the proper observance ob-servance of Memorial day. Charles Mahey of Davis county spoke of the opportunity to inculcate patriotism. patriot-ism. Adjutant General B. A. Wedgwood of the N. G. U., who was captain of battery bat-tery A in the Spanish-American war, made an earnest and forcible address. Others who spoke were Horace Smith, former assistant county attorney; Ray C. Naylor. county treasurer; J. J. Meyers, state hotel inspector, and Joseph Ny-strom. Ny-strom. former county auditor. All of the addresses were received with hearty applause and the spirit of good will and enthusiasm prevailed throughout. |
