AS 3000 motor-mad fans worked themselves into a freny watching one of the greatest dirt track races ever run and ! the thrilling speed battle? between ma-j ma-j chines of the earth and the air at the state fair yesterday afternoon, the oTd west bade the new west welcome. While the spectators in the grand 'stand and bleachers cheered tbe efforts ( of eaeh speed king, on tbe opposite ! side of the track along the fence of the big parade ground cowboys and cowgirls, in wide-brimnied hats and high-heeled boots, and Indians in na-I na-I live costume, expressed their ap-J ap-J proval in whoops and grunts( It was j an incongruous spectacle this ae-j ae-j semblae of the oast and tbe present, jail in one man's life. Today, so far as tbe state fair is con-j con-j eerned. tbe new west will bid the old J west farewell. The big racing motors j and their dare-devil drivers will continue con-tinue on their way and the dare-devils I of the old west will reign supreme on I the track and parade grounds, with the exception of occasional interruptions by the machine of tbe air and old-time I horse races. ! All Are Sensations. Everything in the way of entertainment entertain-ment features at tbe state fair yesterday yester-day was of a sensational order. Every number on the programme, from the spectacular flight of Terah T. Maroney over the city at 11 o'clock in the morning morn-ing to the last act on the coliseum stage iast night, was a thriller of high order. Members of the fair association have spared neither time nor expense to provide one of the best entertainment entertain-ment programmes ever carried out at any western state fair, and if tbe opinions opin-ions of the visitors are to be taken as a criterion their efforts have been eminently successful. The day was all that could be desired de-sired and the track was in ideal condition condi-tion for the speed trials. The exhibitions exhibi-tions were thriliiDg, but no records were broken. However, Eddie Hearne. in his Case car, succeeded in equaling the world's dirt track record of 33 seconds for the half-mile. Hearne had a bad day. After equaling the world's record he had to go to the pit during almost every race for new wheels, and could not overcome the handicaps. Airman Is Victor. The quadruple five-mile handicap was won bv ytriegel in a Stafford ear; Riouchf, in the Mann on. won the first beat of the three-mile ra-e, and Dis-brow. Dis-brow. in the Briscoe car, took first in, the second heat of the twenty-five lap endurance contest. In exhibition Disbrow raced with Ma ron ey in his biplane and came out second beet. The aviator had no troubl.' in outdistancing the motor car. Then just to show that he had no fear of any automobile Maroney joined in the twenty-five Jap race and easily ran away from all the cars. . All the new carnival attractions were staged im mediately after 1 he races, and last night they appeared on the colesium stat'c in con nection with Trwin .Brothers r Wild West show. Today will be the last day nn which the big racing automobile? and their ! daring drivers will bp scpn at th" Iflln state fair. They will close their cn-i cn-i gagement with 1 he contests this after-j after-j noon, and tomorrow t he hois1 races and the wild west show will be the at traction on the race track. However, i Maroney will remain in the city Ihe rc rnainder of th" week, and plans to make I exhibition flights over the city aboiri noon each dav and on f he parade (ground" during the afternoons.
