Sentinel A12 • WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2009 Guardian of Your Community News Lady Dons defeat Bruins, Hawks Bryan Redd STAFF WRITER The Lady Dons posted two quality wins last week on their home floor, defeating two quality non-region teams and showing maturity and character as they prepare for region play. Mountain View traveled to Spanish Fork last Tuesday, as the Lady Dons could not wait for the rematch against last years 4A state champs. The Dons relied on there inside game and strong rebounding to lead at the half 21-19. The Bruins stayed in the game with three,-point shooting as they led 29-28 after three periods. The Bruins jumped out to a three point advantage late in the fourth, but the Dons went inside the paint tying the game at 42-42 sending the game into overtime. The Lady Dons pounded the ball inside the paint wearing down the Bruins. The Dons out rebounded the Bruins in overtime and escaped with a 52-49 victory. SF enjoyed balanced scoring led by Redd with 19, Huntsman 12, Johnson 7, Petersen 5, Nielsen 4, Emerine 2, and Hales 2. On Thursday night the Lady Dons hosted the hawks from North Sanpete. SF dominated the paint and the tempo in the first quarter enjoying a 14-6 lead. SF encountered some foul trouble in the second quarter allowing the North Sanpete to claw their way back into the ball game. Haileigh Emerine anchored a great effort in tHe second quarter with 8 points and 4 rebounds and the Lady Dons went to locker room leading 24-16. North Sanpete made great adjustments at halftime and the Lady Dons played the third quarter with low energy. Spanish Fork offense struggled scoring 2 points in the third quarter. Foul Trouble and non-aggressiveness on behalf of the Dons allowed North Sanpete to take a 29-26 lead into the final quarter. The Lady Dons scored 18 points in the fourth quarter as SF went back to their bread and butter, attacked the basket and outrebounded the Hawks. SF tied the game at 35-35 and went on to defeat the Hawks 44-38. "We saw some great minutes from younger players that helped us as some of our key players are fighting illness. We struggled a bit on the offensive boards last night, not getting defensive stops and playing a lot of back and forth ball. The guards did a great job defensively tonight, Brynlie had some great steals, and Jen did well flustering the point. Erin continues to anchor our offense in the post. SF will visit Lone Peak and American Fork before returning home Saturday to host Bingham. It will be fun for the schools to renew old rivalries. MM plays great half, struggles at the end James Hardman STAFF WRITER On Friday, Dec. 11, the Maple Mountain girls basketball team played against Snow Canyon. Ahead the whole game, Maple Mountain just couldn't hold on in the last quarter. The final score was 37-48. Maple Mountain struck first blood against the Snow Canyon Warriors, taking an early lead that they kept until the third quarter. Maple Mountain was able to block many of the Warriors' shots, and also got many rebounds as well. In the first quarter, Snow Canyon never had more than half of Maple Mountain's points. Jes-. sica Benson was one of the top scorers, scoring eight points for the Golden Eagles. "Jessica did a nice job as point guard," said Coach Cory Green. "She was very controlled on offense." The second quarter of the game opened up with Baylee Nielsen and Kelsey Lewis both scoring early for the Golden Eagles. Nielsen was the top scorer for Maple Mountain, scoring 13 points, taking 11 rebounds, and five steals throughout the course of the game. The score was 19-7 still in favor of Maple Mountain. Several foulshots later, the gap had closed dramatically. At the half, the girls only had a three point lead, 23-20. "It was the best half we have ever played. In fact it was the best basketball the girls have ever played," said Green. "They, did the best they could on offense and defense." But the beginning of the third quarter brought a different story. Snow Canyon, energized from their comeback, plunged forward to overtake the Golden Eagles. Maple Mountain just couldn't get the lead back, and by the fourth quarter, Snow Canyon stole the game, ending at 37-48. "After the first half we got impatient," said Green. ALA put up a good fight, but Bear River won the game 28-23. "This was a tough game," said ALA's head coach Ray Stewart. 'The girls played a hard game last night that lasted until 11:30 p.m., which made them very tired and worn out for this game. We were also missing two of our varsity players. It was jus^t one of those bad games, we ju£t have to sweep it under the table and move on." |
