True, this may have and unexpectedly juxtaposed been the cumulative effect My Unintentional Life of all the cancer treatments I've had just finally getting to me. Bald and cut up is one thing. Being marked on...that just adds insult to injury. I remember a friend once telling me about a recent, drawn out illness she had gone through, (not cancer related) and how she came to feel dehumanized after so many visits to the doctor as well. She said she got to the point that she didn't even have the strength to look people in the eyes anymore. The human spirit is amazing. It thrives and reaches out through all kinds of physical turmoil. The afflicted are more than their afflictions. But you can only be poked and prodded so many times before it affects you emotionally. My best days come from a song being played that I haven't listened to in a while, an amazing sunset, a brilliant theater production or color splashed on a canvas in just the right way...be it in a museum or on afridgedoor. I've come to realize that art in all its forms sustains and replenishes no matter what part- of life has got you down. Why is that?
