Show Holt, Tingey react to death of running mate By TOM IIARALDSEN and JUDY JENSEN BOUNTIFUL Reaction to the deaths of De Monte Washburn Wash-burn and his wife LaRue in Saturday night's traffic accident came Monday from Mr. Washburn's two running mates in next week's race for Bountiful City Council. According to both Dee Tingey and Barbara Holt, their campaign cam-paign will continue. "We're going to go on in all due respect to De Monte," Mr. Tingey stated. "He worked so hard on this campaign, and he was so full of life." He said that he and Mrs. Holt will continue with the trio's platform, which opposes the current Bountiful administration's policies. Mr. Washburn's name will continue to appear on all of the candidate's campaign advertising. Brochures will be changed to eliminate the checkmark beside Mr. Washburn's name, and an explanation will be added to inform voters of his death, Mr. Tingey said. "We still feel confident we will win," he stated. "Many people have commented that they're still behind us. We'll go forward with the campaign just the way De Monte helped plan it." Mrs. Holt expressed the same views, stating that she and Mr. Tingey had spoken with the Washburn family Sunday, discussing discus-sing how they would feel if the campaign continued. "They felt that their father had put a lot of work into the campaign," she said, "and they encouraged us to continue our efforts just as we've planned, as a tribute to him." Mrs. Holt said that, in De Monte Washburn's death, "I have lost a very dear personal friend. It's really everybody's loss. He didn't hold back his feelings on things. He spoke his mind and didn't change with the wind, and it's difficult to find that type of person anymore." She said that honesty and kindness made working on this campaign much easier, and noted that no such campaign has ever been conducted in Bountiful City politics before. - |
