Show Davis High's running game was kept in check by the powerful Highland defense as the Rams beat the Darts 35-11 Friday night to take the league football title for the second year in a row. Both teams open state action this weekend. Highland defeats Davis 35-11, to garner region football title By GARY R. BLODGETT Sports Editor KAYSVILLE Davis High's Darts were unable to "hold" the Highland Rams' Aaron Held and that was the difference in the football game. Not only did the big, rambling fullback score two Ram touchdowns, touch-downs, he picked up ground yardage yar-dage like it was being given away as the Rams romped to a convincing 35-1 1 Region Four victory over the Darts here Friday night. And with the win came undisputed undis-puted first place in Region Four competition and the defending State 4-A champions are well on their way to another state title. It was the last region game of the season for both teams as they head into the state playoffs this weekend. and then scored again on a seven-yard seven-yard pitchout run by Scott Levy and it was 14-3 at the close of the first period. Davis closed the gap when Sean Smith recovered a fumble on the Highland 45. A halfback pass from Emery to Kinard moved the ball to the 18 from where Kinard scored on a nifty run. A two-point conversion conver-sion pass from Emery to Olsen made it 14-11. On fourth down and two, Held tallied the first of two TDs and the Rams held a 2 1-1 1 halftime margin. Olsen recovered a fumble to open the second half but when the Rams held on downs and then later scored on a 48-yard TD run up the middle by Levy, the game was pretty well out of reach, 28-1 1 , with 6:40 left in the third period. Held wrapped things up for the visitors with a 37-yard sprint on a quick opener with 5:18 left in the game. Davis Coach Jim Dickson was pretty upset at the officiating, especially espe-cially the replay of a point-after-touchdown kick by the Rams when the score was 21-11 late in the first half. The blocked kick never hit the ground but was caught by Andy Brown who headed for the end zone. But whistles blew the ball dead. Rams Coach Tom Kingsford thought his runner (Brown) should have been allowed to advance the ball. Dickson argued that the whistles whis-tles blew the play dead. After a discussion of officials, it was determined that there were inadvertent in-advertent whistles blown and Highland was allowed to replay the conversion. This time the kick was good. S The single region loss by the arts dropped Davis into second r lace. Bountiful nipped Viewmont 4-13 in a last-second thriller to tlso gain a state playoff berth, t In the other Region Four encounter, en-counter, Woods Cross tallied a fwo-point conversion to edge East, -7, for first league victory of the season. The Wildcats gained a non-league non-league win over Ogden earlier while the Leopards were winless this year. In Region One of the Class 4-A ' bivision, previously undefeated Layton took it on the chin from Roy who was winless in league play and had everything to gain and nothing to lose. The score was 18-14. 18-14. Other Region One games saw Bonneville defeat Clearfield, 23-13, 23-13, and Box Elder eliminate Weber from the playoffs with a 23-18 win. (State playoff teams and their weekend schedules will appear in Thursday's Davis County Clipper.) Highland really put it together against the Darts including a 98-yard 98-yard kickoff return by speedy Joron Coleman who took the end-over-end kick just inside fair territory terri-tory and picked up his blockers about ab-out 20 yards downfield. Once Coleman who had bet his Dad earlier this year that he could return one (kickoff) all the way broke into the open field, there was no Dart defender that laid a hand on him. He cut to the right sideline and simply outraced the Dart specialty team all the way to the goal line. Not only was it a spectacular run, it came on the heels of a Davis 36-yard field goal by Mike Williams that put the Darts in front 3-0 with 7:29 left in the first period. Coleman's long romp could have broken the backs of the Darts forcing them to play catchup football foot-ball the rest of the game. But that doesn't mean the Darts rolled over and played dead. Not by any means. Davis got off to a good start with a couple of nice runs by Jeff Kinard and a long halfback pass from Bryan Emery to Brian Olsen. A pass interference call on about the Rams' 25 set the stage for Mike Williams to boot a field goal for the first score of the game. But the Rams surged ahead on Coleman's beautiful sideline romp |
