Show Helen Mar Miller camp discusses 1887 during meeting in Layton Park ' : :' tf. ; & 3a - ": J The Helen Mar Miller Camp met Sept. 28 at the Layton Park. Hostesses Hos-tesses Eldean Hymas and June Swaner prepared the luncheon. The camp then returned to the Penrose Pen-rose DUP Cabin to hold their business busi-ness meeting. Meeting was called to order by Parliamentarian Ruth Brown who led the Pledge of Allegiance. Maude Mayfield read an article written by Ann Landers on saluting and proper respect for the flag. Karma Broschinsky gave the lesson on "The Year 1887." An editorial in the Deseret News on Jan. 4, 1887 read "Careening through space at almost incredible velocity, we have just shot past another milepost on our journey to the ocean of eternity. It is marked 1887. This change in the last figure on the dial time changes from 6 to 7 a number which in all ages and amid all nations has been one of mystical significance. We read in the second chapter of Genesis: 'On the seventh day God ended His work which He had made and He rested on the seventh day.' And in the New Testament we have seen the seven churches, the seven candlesticks, the seven stars, etc. Then there were seventy elders, and at a later period there was said to be seventy nations, and seventy languages on the earth." A reader responded, "In 1827 the plates were given to Joseph Smith, in 1837 a great apostasy took place in the different quorums in Kirkland. In 1847 the pioneers arrived in Salt Lake City, in 1857 the great army was sent out to conquer con-quer the Mormons, in 1877 President Presi-dent Brigham Young died, in 1887 the saints are called to mourn tne death of their leader president John Taylor." There were also many adverse weather happenings in 1887. Irene Olsen then told about Farmington, at one time having a seven foot wall all around the town: with seven gates, this was to keep out the Indians. And that the Penrose cabin at one time was at the court house, then moved to the rock chapel, but when the church built the last extension on, they were going to destroy the cabin. But through the efforts of Irene Olsen it was saved. June Swaner donated the piece of ground it now stands on. The camp is grateful grate-ful as the cabin will never have to be moved again. Those present were Marvel Mayfield, Ethel Perry, Wilma Miller, Mil-ler, Karma Broschinsky, Violet Lake, Hilda Neibaur, Mary Steed, June Swaner, Maude Mayfield, Irene Olsen, Eldean Hymas, Ruth Brown, Enid Seiger, and new member Betty Strong.
