Show sept. 26, 1972 page 8 signpost student government explained; helps, protects student interests by brent johns political editor Student government at Weber State is a multi-committeed entity, the declared purpose of which is to give voice to the student's wants and find answers for his needs. It is a complex of a three branched government and many boards and committees. The focal point of student government is the Executive Cabinet of ASWSC (easier to write and short for the legal name of the studentbody, the Associated Students of Weber State College). The Executive Cabinet consists of seven members and a legal advisor. Fran Wheeler, ASWSC president; Ken Burrows, executive vice president; Don Hughes, legislative vice president; Dennis Fowler, financial vice president; Wendy Turner, activities vice president; Alan J. Daley, Dean of Students; and Curtis Smout, Coordinator of Student Government are voting members of the Executive Cabinet.Ellery Bennett is the Legal Advisor. The offices of the ASWSC are located in the Student Activities Center of the Union Building. The Executive Cabinet directs all the activities of student government, directs Executive Committees, makes committee appointments, recommends budgets and generally serves as liason between students and the administration. This summer the Executive Cabinet has been busy formulating goals for the year, going through the long process of interviewing people for committee chairmanships and membership, establishing communication with the administration under President Bishop and considering changes in the form of Student government. Executive Cabinet meetings are held at 4 p.m. Monday and are open to all students. The five studentbody offices come up for election in April. Senate is the legislative arm of the ASWSC. It is comprised of 14 members from five academic areas and one senator elected at large. The Senate is concerned with a wide variety of interests from approving constitutions of campus organizations to approving and finalizing budgets and including a wide range of other areas both academic and activity oriented going to the Senate for action. Senators have their boxes in the Student Activities Center, where students can contact Senators and express their ideas. Senate meetings are open to all groups or individuals desiring to attend. Senate meetings this fall will be Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m. Seven Senate seats will be open for election this fall probably in mid-November.The Supreme Court is a five member body which only functions when a controversy arises. Its members, are ap pointed, but haven't been selected yet for this school year. Along with the main organizations, there exist many committees in the student government area including Ombudsman, Homecoming, Elections etc. Many positions on these committees are open including some chairmanships. Those interested can apply through Executive Cabinet members or by contacting the studentbody secretary in the Activities Center. Student government should be your means to express and correct what you feel needs to be improved or changed. It can only be effective as it receives input, ideas and service from the students whom it is meant to serve. SNIFTERS GIANT SIZE Use as a terrarium, planter, or decorator conversation peice.
