Cornerback Mike Mannott snatched a Vandal pass on a perfectly timed interception and raced 42 yards for a touchdown. Minutes later the defense pounced on an Idaho fumble inside the 15 yard line. Two plays later Phil Bland blasted around the end for another touchdown. Before Idaho could get going again, linebacker Craig Schneider intercepted another Vandal pass and raced 51 yards for the score. It was Weber's inexperienced defense that gave the Wildcats their opening day victory. The front line hit hard and adjusted well throughout the game with only minor lapses. Weber used a zone pass defense which effectively cut off the long pass and eventually tightened up on the short slant out patterns to cut off the Idaho air game. Former basketball star Jon-nie Knoble was outstanding in his debute as a middle linebacker showing lots of hustle and aggressive hitting. At times he almost seemed a part of the Idaho backfield. Julio Rodriguez was also impressive. The junior college transfer from Los Angeles seemed right at home on the Wildcat front line. Defense was not expected to be a strong point with the Weber squad this year but they showed good potential against Idaho. Weber's offense was somewhat disappointing compared with last year and preseason expectations. John Edwards started at quarterback assuming the same role he played in seven games last season. He looked improved over last year and his selection of plays seemed good. However, a bobbled pitch by newcomer Jim Larson on the third play from scrimmage was recovered by Idaho. The Vandals quickly turned the mistake into points as Steve Tanner hit on a 36 yard field-' goal and three points. Weber came back fast after the kickoff which Phil Bland returned to the 40 yardline. Edwards mixed his plays well as he sent Larson on a sweep for 19 yards, nullified by a penalty, then ran a keeper for four yards. Terry Bulych blasted up the middle for nine followed by Edwards' first pass which was complete to Bojak out of the back-field for 41 yards. A clipping penalty, and penalties plagued the Wildcats throughout the first half, cut 15 yards from the pass play and the Idaho defense stiffened to hold the Wildcats for the next three plays. A bad snap from center thwarted Dave Karadagian's fieldgoal attempt and Idaho took over on downs. Weber's defense met the call and forced the Vandals to punt. Phil Bland brought the fans to their feet with what appeared to be a touchdown return but he had stepped out on the Idaho 49 yard mark. Edwards gave each of his running backs a call and ran twice himself moving the ball to the Idaho 21 vard line. Edwards then pitched out to Bojack who attempted a halfback pass at Lynn Bennington who had out distanced the Idaho defensive backs, but the pass was overthrown. On the next play Bojak was stopped for no gain as he attempted to sweep right end. Edwards then went to the air again and hit Bojak circling out of the backfield on the 5 yard line. Bojak bobbled the ball momentarily but regained possession as he crossed into the endzone. Karadagian's kick was wide but the Wildcats led 6-3. Idaho found themselves with bad field position following the kickoff as their return man slipped on the one yard line as he prepared to run the ball back. Idaho remained in bad field position for the rest of the first quarter and much of the second quarter. A bad punt by Bulych midway through the second quarter gave Idaho possession on their own 48 yard line. Quarterback Ross Goddard lost no time in taking advantage of the break as Idaho reeled off three straight first downs. Halfback Jerry Hall ran for 12 yards, then Goddard hit Kirk Dennis on a slant out pattern for 11 yards. Goddard then handed the ball to his sensational runner, Bernie Rembert who ripped through the Weber line for 26 yards putting the ball on the Wildcat three yard-line. Goddard again called on Rembert who blasted off tackle for the score. Steve Tanner added the PAT and the Vandals led 10-6. Idaho found themselves in another scoring position one play after the kickoff as they recovered a fumble on Weber's first play from scrimmage. Larson couldn't hang on to an Edwards pitchout and Idaho's Mike Newell recovered his second fumble of the night. Goddard called on Rembert who gained 17yards on three successive plays but a third down pass to Dennis fell short and Steve Tanner came on to attempt another field goal. The kick was wide to the left and Weber took possession on their own twenty yard line. Charlie Grayson took over at quarterback for the Wildcats but could not get the 'Cats rolling and with 12 seconds left in the half the Wildcats punted to Idaho. The Vandals tried two long passes which were incomplete as time ran out. As the half ended the Vandals still led 10-6. Idaho took the kickoff to start the second half but a recharged Weber defense forced them to punt before they could get moving.Brad Hawkin's 2 yard punt return gave the Wildcats good field position on their own 45 yardline and Grayson remained at quarterback. Hard running by Bulych, Bojak, Larson and Grayson carried the Wildcats down to the Idaho nine yard line with a fourth and two situation. The Wildcats elected to run the ball and Grayson pitched out to Larson on a sweep. Larson had trouble finding the handle on the ball and the hole which had been opened by his blockers quickly dis appeared and he was tackled after a gain of only one yard. Idaho took over on downs on their own eight yard line. Idaho started moving as Hall picked up three yards, Goddard hit Dennis with a pass for five yards and Hall carried for another three. Goddard then hit Bill Kashetta on a slant pattern for five yards, threw to Collie Mack on the other side for 12 yards and sent Rembert up the middle for four yards and Idaho was on their own 43 yard line. Goddard again set up to pass looking for his tight end running a slant out pattern. But, Weber's Mannott timed his move perfectly picking the ball off at full speed and raced untouched 42 yards for the score. The momentum now swung over to Weber as kicker Dan Kriedler booted the ball into the endzone and Idaho couldn't run it out. Goddard sent Hall off the right side for no gain then on the second play set up to pass. As he pumped to throw the ball slipped off his hand around the 15 yard line. The Idaho crew apparently thought the ball would be ruled an incomplete pass as they made no move to cover the ball. Weber's Dennis Allred alertly fell on the ball at the Idaho 14 yard line and Weber took possession. Two plays later Phil Bland blasted into the end zone from five yards out. Ross Torgerson came on and kicked the PAT and Weber led 19-10. Idaho returned the kickoff to their own 23 yard line and Goddard immediately started to move the Vandals. Rembert flashed around end for 14 more yards and Idaho was out to the 47 yard line. Weber tightened up the zone pass defense and broke up Goddards next two pass attempts. With third down and ten yards to go Goddard again went to the air and this time it was Wildcat linebacker Craig Schneider who stepped in front of the Vandal receiver to snatch the ball. A good downfield block on Goddard cleared the way for Schneider to go all-the-way for the touchdown. Torgerson again booted the PAT and the Wildcats were ahead 26-10. Idaho threatened on their next series driving from their own 20 yard line inside of the Weber ten but the Wildcats stiffened forcing a fumble which Shane Mosher recovered on the nine yard line. soloist Johannesen, |
