Show BURGLARS FOILED IN ATTEMPT TO ROB JEFF MERC CO. Bugged Building Baffles Bold Burglars. That is the heading Elwood Jefferson suggested we use on the story of an attempted burglary at Jeff Merc about 3 a. m. Tuesday. The would-be thief gained entrance through an air conditioning condi-tioning unit on the roof, dropped drop-ped 12 feet through the shaft to the floor of the grocery department de-partment and started through the back areaway toward the hardware side where guns, radios, televisions and other "pawnable" merchandise is displayed. When he opened the door to the areaway the Jeff Merc burglar alarm, a shrill police siren, was tripped and Mr. Burglar dashed for an exit. He broke a window in the ladies' rest room but was thwarted by bars across the window. Then he dashed to the appliance department, kicked the window out of a door, and made his exit. Ray Whiting, an employee of Jeff Merc who lives three blocks from the store, was awakened by the siren and he telephoned the Hong Kong Cafe, night phone for the police department, to give the alarm. Nothing was taken, and the only loss to Jeff Merc was replacement re-placement of the two broken glasses and damage to the air conditioning unit. |
