Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 10 Volume IX Issue XI March 15, 2004 Valley Elementary Featured in “USA Today” Huntsville’s own Valley Elementary made national news in the March 1, 2004 edition of USA Today. The national publication hosted a feature article about sixthgrade teachers Michelle Evans, Carolyn Hogge, Shirl Weight; and part-time teachers Michelle Taton and Jayna Frost. The news article highlighted the teachers’ successful team efforts in providing fun and stimulating activities and programs to make practical learning fun and stimulating. The motivated team of teachers has generated for the school over $130,000 in grant money. Michelle Evans of Eden was quoted in the article, explaining how this productive team of teachers effectively works, “I’m probably the idea person, the brainstorming person, the grant writer. Carolyn Hogge is meticulous, detail-oriented, the one who can research an idea and find the materials to back it up. Weight is the technology [wiz], and Taton and Frost, who started with the team last year, bring a sense of youth, energy, and fun.” The article highlights a few of the programs students at Valley Elementary have benefited from: Read for the Gold, EconoMe, Mr. Blue, and a futuristic space ship computer and science lab project. Weight has taught sixth grade at Valley Elementary for 26 years, Evans for 18, and Hogge for the last six. In the article, Huntsville Town was described as a community with a population of 541, which has no traffic light, two restaurants, a park, and a church. Snowcrest Eighth Grade Basketball Team Captures District Win By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Snowcrest Junior High’s eighth grade basketball team created quite a stir by capturing a 2nd Place win in the Weber School District’s Junior High Basketball Tournament held March 4 at T.H. Bell Junior High. Earlier wins against Wahlquist, Orion, and North Ogden carried the Valley team into the championship round. Playing backto-back games, the 8th grade team beat out Roy Junior High, to then lose the First Place win to the rested team from Sandridge. Sandy Hogge stated, “This Valley team has been playing together for several years. Their game continues to improve each year. They play awesome together, and have a lot of fun doing it.” The team is coached by Richard Holley of Huntsville and Cord Pack of Eden. Team players include Trevor Coccimiglio, Aaron Froerer, Jacob Hillstrom, Josh Hogge, Jon Holley, Sean Holley, Travis Kennedy, and Josh Pack. The Sixth Grade Valentine’s Dance ers spent a lot of time planning the dance on their free time. By Taylor Jensen, Student Reporter This year’s 6th grade Valentine’s Dance was one of the greatest Valentine’s dances at Valley Elementary School. Parents came and decorated about an hour before the dance. (Thank you parents for your wonderful job.) The dance was great. Mrs. Oberg went around and took some pictures, and all the parents that decorated went around and embarrassed their kids. The teach- The 6th grade appreciates all they did to make the dance happen. Kids said that they didn’t really want to do the dancing part though. Most of them complained that they had to touch hands. We had to practice dancing a lot of times before the real thing happened. I know that everybody washed their hands after the practice and the real thing. The girls that got to dance with the guys they liked claimed they would never wash their hands. When it was over everybody had had a really good time. Most kids couldn’t believe it was time to go home so fast. They could dance forever. But the next day they forgot all about it. Celeste C. You’ll have a chance to get your fill of “basketball madness” at the Annual Valley Tournament scheduled for April 7, 8, 9, 14, and 15 at Snowcrest Junior High. This annual tournament has been going on for over 50 years. Team participation is open to any current or former Ogden Valley resident. The tournament always has some very competitive teams participating, and offers a great opportunity for local basketball players and their fans and/or family members to enjoy some good, family fun! Tournament director Vern Iverson is expecting some talented teams to participate again this year. In years past, there have been some terrific players from the High School and College levels, and, of course, don’t forget those “golden oldies” who are still playing some great ball! Vern Iverson is trying to develop/create a youth division with players between the ages of about 12 and 16. Besides basketball, sometimes there is halftime entertainment on the final night. It should be a fun event for the entire family. All proceeds from the tournament benefit youth recreation. Team rosters and fees need to be turned in by March 28, and can be dropped off at the Iverson Dental Clinic. If you have any questions, contact Vern Iverson at 745-0641 or Kathy Allen at 745-2709. Plan on spending an evening—or even a whole week of evenings—enjoying the community event of the year—basketball madness at the Valley Tournaments! See you there!
